Chris Christie Takes Aim At Republicans Trying To Defend Donald Trump
Chris Christie, former governor of New Jersey and a possible presidential candidate in 2024, criticized his fellow Republicans for continuing to back Donald Trump despite the president’s indictment on criminal charges, according to The Rolling Stone. On Monday night, Christie said to other candidates who had criticized the DOJ on behalf of the previous president: “Blame him, he did it.”
Trump was indicted on 37 federal felony counts, including violations of the espionage act, conspiracy to obstruct justice, corruptly concealing a record or document, concealing a document in a federal investigation, and scheme to conceal, after the DOJ investigated his hoarding of classified documents after he left office for months.
“Whether you like Donald Trump or you don’t like Donald Trump, this conduct is inexcusable, in my opinion, for someone who wants to be President of the United States,” Christie told Anderson Cooper.
“What makes it so ridiculous that we’re here and we’re in a situation where there are people in my own party who are blaming [the] DOJ. How about blame him? He did it,” Christie added, then continued to list the many opportunities Trump had to return the documents. “He took documents he wasn’t supposed to take. He kept them when he asked [for] them back. They got a grand jury subpoena. He refused to comply. They raided his home finally because he refused to comply.”
Christie then criticized his other Republican contenders for not aggressively challenging Trump out of “fear of him.” Republican Accountability posted an official tweet which can be seen below.

The ex-governor elaborated that he believed the other contenders were waiting to be nice to Trump until they could steal some of his supporters away. “They’re playing political games with you,” Christie said, “because they think ‘If you kind of like Trump a little bit, and I don’t say anything bad about Trump, and then Trump kind of implodes and goes away, then you’re more likely to vote for me.'”
As previously reported, Trump’s legal staff is in disarray, yet he is still scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday in Miami. In spite of the fact that Special Counsel Jack Smith has demanded a fast trial, the matter will go to court just as the Republican primaries begin to heat up.
Christie was categorical in his response to Cooper’s question about Trump’s participation in the Republican presidential debates, saying, “You bet he will. His ego will not be able to stop him.”
