Freese is a seasoned drummer who has worked with several notable bands such as Nine Inch Nails, The Offspring, Sting, and Weezer. In 2022, he performed alongside the Foo Fighters at a memorial concert in London for Hawkins, using the late drummer’s actual drum set.

For the London tribute event, Freese reportedly insisted on using Hawkins’ drum kit, writing on Instagram with a shot of the instrument, “I want THAT energy to be up on THAT stage.” Freese reflected on his friendship with Hawkins in the same piece, writing that they frequently bonded over feeling like they “were the only 2 guys from (Orange County) in the room.”

Hawkins, who just turned 50, passed away in March of 2022 while on tour in Colombia. The Foo Fighters announced their intention to continue performing together in January, stating, “Without Taylor, we never would have become the band that we were — and without Taylor, we know that we’re going to be a different band going forward.” Check the official tweet by Giuseppe Mercadante below.

“And we know that when we see you again — and we will soon — he’ll be there in spirit with all of us every night.”

A new album titled “But Here We Are” is set for release on June 2nd, and the band said in April that it was doing so “following a year of staggering losses, personal introspection, and bittersweet remembrances.”
