Red (Taylor’s Version) is a new album by Taylor Swift, featuring a previously unreleased track. Taylor’s “Ronan” is a song she created almost 10 years ago, but it only appears on her most recent album. Who exactly was Ronan, and why did Taylor choose to include a song about him on her album?
Who Is Ronan In Taylor Swift’s Song?
The song “Ronan” is dedicated to Ronan Thompson, a little child who lost his courageous struggle with neuroblastoma in May 2011. According to Billboard, Taylor was moved to compose the song after reading Maya Thompson’s blog, Rockstar Ronan, about her son Ronan.
“Ronan” was written from Maya’s point of view. Taylor debuted the song at a 2012 telethon benefiting Stand Up to Cancer, and “Ronan” was only accessible for a limited time on iTunes following that performance.
According to People, Taylor now has a brand new lyric video for “Ronan” to go along with the song’s appearance on her most recent album.
Taylor contacted Thompson before she even considered placing the song on Red (Taylor’s Version). Taylor emailed Thompson, “I’ve recently completed the re-recording of my 4th album, Red,” as stated in one of Thompson’s latest blog posts.
“It’s really exceeded my expectations in so many ways, and one of those ways is that I thought it would be appropriate to add ‘Ronan’ to this album. Red was an album of heartbreak and healing, of rage and rawness, of tragedy and trauma, and of the loss of an imagined future alongside someone. I wrote Ronan while I was making Red and discovered your story as you so honestly and devastatingly told it,” Taylor continued.

“My genuine hope is that you’ll agree with me that this song should be included on this album. According to Billboard, Thompson has since agreed to be included as a co-writer on the song. In her blog, she wrote, “I tried my best to articulate how much this meant to me through my tears, but there are not enough words in the English language that will ever be able to appropriately convey my feelings about this.”
Thompson wrote to Ronan on her blog, “Taylor has anchored you to this world so you will never be lost, and now she has ensured that you will forever be safe in a new, permanent home. She is once again going to give a voice to the often voiceless, the bereaved parents of the world. ‘Red (Taylor’s version)’ will be out November 19th and on that album, there will be you.” You can see the Taylor Swift’s version of Ronan in the video below.
Thompson ended her piece with a direct response to Taylor. “Thank you for keeping Ronan safe. Thank you for never forgetting him. Thank you for breaking rules and breaking free,” she wrote.
“Thank you for that heart of yours that is made of pure gold. You are a constant source of inspiration to me in so many areas of my life, and there is nobody in the world I would rather have Ronan with than you.”
The Ronan Foundation keeps Ronan’s spirit alive. As stated on their website, their mission is to change the world of childhood c@ncer by funding innovative research for more effective, less toxic treatments.
