Ta-Nehisi Coates, a novelist and comic book writer, may “soon” be ready to hand in his script for a new Superman film. Reporter Jeff Sneider heard rumours that J.K. Abrams, director of Star Trek and Star Wars, would be producing a film based on Coates’s new take on the DC icon.
Although it was announced last year, not much is known about the upcoming Man of Steel reboot from J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates beyond the fact that a Black actor will play the title role. As with director Matt Reeves’ The Batman, rumours have circulated that the Superman reboot will take place outside of the DCEU and feature a new interpretation of Kal-El as the first Black Superman.
A continuation of the report states that Ta-Nehisi Coates is “crafting a Kal-El in the vein of the original Superman comics and will have the protagonist hail from Krypton and come to Earth.” The fact that people are already talking about the project as if it were “a 20th-century period piece” is a good sign that Abrams and Coates will bring something new to the big-screen version of Superman.
Despite Sneider’s assurances that the draught for the Superman reboot is on the horizon, another insider, Justin Kroll, soon arrived to dampen the enthusiasm. In response, Kroll explained that “soon” in the business world meant anywhere from four to sixteen weeks. This was information he had received in early February.
“That’s not meant to be sarcastic; it just sounds like something salespeople would say to executives to buy time while they wait for a slow client to finish a draught. Twenty months after hearing that a draught of Planet of the Apes would be coming in “soon,” I’m still waiting.”

There Are Currently Several Superman Projects in the Pipeline
J.J. Abrams’ relaunch of a beloved series. The Superman movie co-written by J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates isn’t the only one in development. While many DC fans would love to see Henry Cavill return to the role of Superman in a sequel to Man of Steel, Warner Bros. is instead concentrating on new interpretations of the iconic character.
The studio is also interested in adapting Ta-Nehisi Coates’s idea to feature alternate Superman Val-Zod. Star of Black Panther and Creed Michael B. Jordan is creating a new project based on the Earth-2 version of the villain Val Zod.
Val Zod, one of the last Kryptonians in his universe, leads a solitary existence and is blissfully ignorant of his abilities until catastrophic events force him to come out of hiding and assume the mantle of Superman. Val-Zod: The Live Action Adaptation is currently in development for HBO Max, with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts screenwriters Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters penning the script.
