It is common for heroes in the Marvel Universe to have either a single Super Villain nemesis or multiple enemies throughout their careers. There is the Green Goblin for Spider-Man, the Red Skull for Captain America, and the Leader for the Hulk. There is also Mary MacPherran, better known as the super-strong Titania, who competes with Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk.

She-Hulk and Titania have been at each other’s throats for nearly four decades of comic book adventures. Titania has been defeated in most of their fights, but she continues coming back for more. Titania grew obsessed with defeating She-Hulk, despite her frequent inability to reflect on her feelings for Jennifer. Luckily, readers can learn more about what brought She-Hulk and Titania together in the first place, and why they might be willing to try something new, by reading the comics about the conflict that is available on Marvel Unlimited.

Secret Wars

The history of She-Hulk and Titania’s rivalry must be traced back to its earliest stages in order to be comprehended. This necessitates a return to the SECRET WARS era (1984). Titania and her friend Marsha Rosenberg/Volcana first appeared in comic books in issue #3 as voluntary conscripts of Doctor Doom, the man who gave them their powers in the Beyonder’s Battleworld. As of issue #7, Titania had never faced She-Hulk head-on.

But SHE-HULK (2004) #10 provided the crucial background for that conflict. The issue went into considerable length about the bullying and body dissatisfaction Mary MacPherran experienced as a teenager. Once Mary had attained Titania’s might, she felt unstoppable. According to the extended version of Jennifer’s initial battle with She-Hulk, she defeated Mary before the other villains joined in. Titania’s lifelong animosity with She-Hulk was stoked by the fact that she never got over the feeling of helplessness she had.

Supreme Ultimatum

Inexplicably, She-Hulk didn’t see Titania again until SOLO AVENGERS (1987) #14. Fortunately for Jennifer, Jennifer was able to demonstrate her superiority over Titania in a series of rather one-sided battles. Titania attacked Jen at a terrible time. Because today was Jennifer’s big day to present her case to the Supreme Court of the United States. Because of her preoccupation with Titania, Jen missed her chance.

Because of that, Jennifer is quite irritated right now, and you wouldn’t like a Hulk when it’s mad. Because of how terrifying She-Hulk was, Titania agreed to stop attacking her permanently. Titania, however, was unable to muster the willpower necessary to fulfill her pledge.

Freaky Friday

Titania’s betrayal in SENSATIONAL SHE-HULK (1989) #49 didn’t shock anyone, did it? Titania, as always, chose the perfect time to strike. Jennifer Walters and her BFF Louise “Weezy” Mason switched bodies due to alien interference. As a result, Louise became the new She-Hulk while Jennifer shrank, became shorter, and lost a lot of her strength. While she was still a bit unseasoned.

Titania didn’t seem to care that Jen’s weakened condition made the battle unbalanced. What she really wanted was revenge on Jennifer, and she almost achieved it. Jennifer might have perished if Louise hadn’t ultimately given up her She-Hulk abilities. As soon as Jennifer regained her strength, she quickly dispatched Titania.

Infinite Power

To avenge himself on his archenemy She-Hulk, the Elder of the Universe known as Champion gifted Titania his Power Gem in SHE-HULK (2004) #10. To wit: issue #11 in Titania’s series. Titania came very close to killing Jennifer with the Power Gem’s strength. The She-Hulk knew that she couldn’t win the fight with brute might alone. For this reason, in the rematch seen in issue #12, Jennfier let Titania think she had successfully murdered her opponent. Titania’s brief feeling of victory was ultimately hollow, and she was knocked down when Jennifer took the Power Gem and used it to her advantage.

The “quiet” Life

Titania’s psyche was severely damaged by her chronic losses to She-Hulk and the tragic events of SECRET WARS (2015). Titania merely desired to return to her identity as Mary in ILLUMINATI (2015) #1 and concentrate on starting a family with her husband Carl “Crusher” Creel, aka the Absorbing Man. Jennifer was dubious of Mary’s about-face, but she encouraged her to apply for a security position at a pawn shop anyway.

Mary’s attempt to change her ways was cut short when she was recruited by criminal kingpin Hood and had her new employment ruined. Whatever the case may be, Titania had obvious suspicions about the Hood’s true goals and motives when it came to her. After the Hood recommended murdering the families of their heroic opponents in ILLUMINATI (2015) #7, Titania and several other villains abandoned him. Titania, however, was unconvinced by the Hood’s plot and tore the magical cloak in half before recommitting to her marriage to Carl.
