In 1987, Russell Okung was born in Fort Bend, Texas. He graduated from George Bush High School, where he was named to the first teams of both the district and all of Greater Houston. On June 6, 2023, he began a strict 40-day water diet that he continued until July 17, 2023, in order to reach his desired physical goals. The former offensive tackle made the decision to start on a personal fitness quest when he retired from the sport.

He has mentioned how there were clear obstacles he had to overcome when he was a successful football player. He experienced pulmonary embolism. He had lacerated lungs, numerous operations, and ligament and tendon damage; it was difficult for him to get out of bed every day.

In addition, he encountered challenges after retiring.He had the wonderful notion that things would be simpler after he was done playing. However, the difficulty increased. His testosterone levels were zero. He has a wife, two children, and a demanding life. He couldn’t fulfill such requirements.

Okung remarked that he had placed his health on the back burner while he was at the top of his career, which is what drove him to begin his weight loss quest, which needed such severe discipline and tenacity. But after he “took a step back” and observed the situation objectively, he was able to “see the reality.”
