Roger Staubach’s Early Life
On February 5, 1942, Roger Thomas Staubach entered this world. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was Elizabeth and Robert Staubach’s only child. Silverton, a suburb of Cincinnati located to the northeast, was his childhood home. In 1960, he graduated from Cincinnati’s Catholic Purcell High School (now called Purcell Marian High School).

Roger Staubach’s College Career
After studying for a year at the New Mexico Military Institute, Staubach enrolled in the United States Naval Academy in 1961. In 1962, as a third-class midshipman (a sophomore), he made his football debut for the Navy Midshipmen in a game against the University of Minnesota.
He started as quarterback for the team. On his debut, he came in for starter Ron Klemick and helped the team to a 21-0 loss to Minnesota. Some weeks later, President John F. Kennedy flipped the coin at the legendary Army-Navy game in which Staubach started. Their victory over Army was 31-14 thanks to Staubach’s leadership.
After a strong start to his collegiate career, Staubach maintained his high standards. After losing the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day against the then-ranked University of Texas Longhorns, his junior year of 1963 saw the Midshipmen finish the season ranked second in the country.
Additionally, he was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in October 1963 and won the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and Walter Camp Memorial Trophy during his junior season.
During his three years at the Navy, Staubach threw for 463 yards and either 18 or 19 touchdowns. With 4,253 yards of total offense, he also established a new record for his school. Following his graduation from the Naval Academy in June 1965, he elected to volunteer for a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam. He supervised 41 enlisted soldiers during his time as a Supply Corps officer at the Chu Lai base/port, which lasted until September 1967.
