Prologue
When Dragon Ball Z opens, Raditz has landed on Earth in a space pod looking for a man named “Kakarot,” who turns out to be Goku. When Raditz’s scouter registers a power surge after he knocks out the farmer who discovered his space pod, he immediately identifies Goku as the source.

As he investigates the origin of the power, he runs upon Goku’s archenemy, Piccolo. Piccolo warns Raditz off of Earth and refuses to tell him where he can get “Kakarot.”
Battle
Raditz mocks Piccolo before firing a devastating strike that leaves him completely unharmed, shocking Piccolo. Just as Raditz is about to annihilate Piccolo, he picks up on a higher power level and recognizes it as belonging to his quarry, Kakarot.
Aftermath
The Kame House, where Goku was reuniting with Bulma, Krillin, Master Roshi, and Turtle and introducing his son Gohan to them, is where Raditz finds the source of the strength.
