I needed to know exactly which comic book or graphic novel I wanted to read and buy it online when I first became interested in comics as a young kid (Astonishing X-Men, anyone?). Don’t misunderstand me. It slowed down my ascent into complete comic book assimilation, but as a rookie comic aficionado without a local comic book store to help me, I read some fantastic comic books that way.
My main sources for finding new plotlines were authors and artists I enjoyed or may want to learn more about the MCU’s characters and stories. I’ve discovered a tonne of resources over the years to find and read fresh comics. The best thing, though? A large number of these resources are free!

You might be surprised by how many options there are to read comics online for free, whether you’re a seasoned comic book enthusiast or you’re just dipping your toes in (don’t be afraid! Lots of us are pleasant!). We like to hear things that are free and legal.
Contents
Graphite Comics
I recently found this site by accident and was shocked by the sheer number of comics and graphic novels I recognised from my TBR, including some like Steampunk Snow Queen that I couldn’t get through any other legal comic sites. On Graphite, you can read a variety of Boom, Valiant, and Dark Horse comics for free. Start reading comics for free today with Slam! Lumberjanes, The Next Jam, Divinity, Ladycastle, Goldie Vance, or Divinity.
Hoopla
A library card, perhaps? So it’s likely that you have access to Hoopla’s amazing collection of comics and graphic novels, in addition to ebooks, audiobooks, movies, TV series, and music. Because the app is so user-friendly and has such a big collection of comics and graphic novels to navigate through, it is one of my personal favourites for reading comics. Since it’s likely that if you have a list of comics you want to read, you’ll find one of your choices here, I won’t even bother offering recommendations on where to start with Hoopla.
Tapas
You might not have explored webcomics if your experience with reading comics is limited to major companies like Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, etc. But you ought to! On websites like Tapas.io, independent and upcoming authors post their comics, offering people all around the world the chance to fall in love with their work. It happens frequently for stories that start as webcomics to eventually be published in print. Think about Heartstopper, Mooncakes, Fangs, and Nimona.
Where do you begin? I’d personally suggest Cosmoknights for sci-fi aficionados, Gutless for some mermaid/princess/knight fantasy romps, and Underforest Tales for some sweet slice-of-life comics with a cottagecore vibe on Tapas. Numerous lists of recommended webcomics for particular genres, such as creepy SFF webcomics, LGBTQ webcomics, and webcomics for beginners, can be found online. To locate exactly what you’re searching for, you can also sort comics by genre on the Tapas app or website. I’m asking, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and begin exploring.
Dc Universe Infinite
You can discover both recent and back issues of DC Universe Infinite under the “Free to Read” heading. Keep checking the website to see what’s available as the list of available comics tends to change frequently. You can currently read the first issue of Sylvester, Catwoman/Tweety, and Sweet Tooth. Even though the variety isn’t huge, it’s still free!
Barnes & Noble Free Nook Ebooks
This part of the Barnes & Noble website offers a variety of free nook ebook comics and graphic novels, just as it was advertised. Not a bad deal at all! The selection of DC works is surprisingly extensive and includes titles like Superman Smashes the Clan, Supergirl: Being Super, and Batman from the DC Universe Rebirth.
There were additional imprints under the Graphic Novels & Comics Ebooks heading, such as IDW and First Second. Most of the downloads are merely sneak peeks or previews, but some also contain one or two issues, so it’s something to look into. To uncover the hidden jewels, you simply need to be ready to browse a little.
Webtoon
To keep you occupied and entertained, there are even more free webcomics! In the same way, as Tapas is accessible via the web or an app, WEBTOON offers a wide selection of incredible comics that you can read online for free. Also being released by Del Rey Books later this year is Lore Olympus, so make sure to check that out.
Digital Comic Museum & Comic Book Plus
These two are listed together because, despite having significantly different content, the goal of their selection is the same—to make a wide range of Golden and Silver Age comics available for free to the public. Most of these titles should be familiar to you.
I doubt it. However, if you’re seeking to read any lesser-known vintage comics or are looking for a certain out-of-print issue, you could just discover what you’re looking for here.
Comixology Free Comics
While Comixology is an Amazon app for paid comic subscriptions, it also provides several comics and graphic novels for free download. A cursory lookup found several jewels that were freely available, including Lady Mechanika, Black Panther, Faith vol. 1, and The Walking Dead.
Libby
Did I mention how beneficial having a library card is? The majority of libraries offer their patrons a variety of other apps and databases that you may access from the comfort of your home in addition to the comics and graphic novels you’ll find on the shelf at your neighbourhood library.
Similar to Hoopla, the Libby app lets you borrow a tonne of ebooks, audiobooks, and comics from your phone. Even titles you intend to read later can be saved and tagged for quick searches.
The selection varies depending on the particular database that your local library uses, but every single one I’ve tried has kept me occupied with fantastic comics and graphic novels to read, both new and old. And everything is free! Thankfully, libraries exist.
These are some of my preferred websites where I can read comics for free online. They’ve been helpful to me throughout the years, and now I’m hoping they’ll also be helpful to you as you further explore the world of comic books and graphic novels. Cheers to reading!
