Kubb’s Origins and Evolution
The game was created mostly in Sweden, a Scandinavian country. Kubb is said to have been a Viking board game. Viking Chess is a common name for the game.
It’s a Skittles-inspired spinoff. Unlike bowling, Skittles may be played both indoors and outdoors. It was popular in Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and remains so even in the twenty-first. Skittles are pins that have rounded middle and tapering ends.
Pins are knocked down by a player’s ball, and they receive points for each one. Kubb, a Swedish version of Skittles, was rising in popularity as Skittles spread across Europe. Instead of a ball, players throw batons at the pins, which resemble skittles (despite their square shape).
You must knock over an additional pin to win the game. A “pitch” is required for both games. An area known as a pitch is where pins are positioned and batons are launched. Before the game begins, the pitch size is determined (from the official Kubb rules).
Kubb Playing Pieces and Set-Up
Ten kubbs are included in a Kubb set (rectangular wooden blocks that stand upright). Each of these kubbs is 15 cm tall and 7 cm square at its base. The king, a larger kubb with a crown-like top, stands 30 cm tall and has a 9 cm square end cap. Six batons are cylinders with a diameter of 4.4 cm and a length of 30 cm. Additionally, six-pitch stakes are used to designate the pitch’s four corners and centerline.
5 metres by 8 metres is the size of the pitch used for Kubb. National Championship and World Championship rules specify this pitch size. Measure the four corners of the pitch and set pitch marking stakes in each of them. To divide the field into two halves, the final two stakes are placed on either side of the pitch’s centerline.
To begin the game, the King hub is set up in the middle of the pitch, standing tall. Each side of the pitch has five kubbs, evenly spaced apart, located on the pitch’s two baselines (the sides that measure 5 metres). The kubbs should be in the middle of the baseline when standing upright. Before the game begins, six batons are distributed to each team. Each team can have one, three, or six members.
How to Play Kubb
Throwing six batons from the baseline behind their kubbs, the team chose to go first throws at the kubbs of the opposing team from behind their kubbs. The batons must be flung covertly and end over end to reach their desired destination in one piece.
For any of their opponents’ kubbs that they manage to destroy. The kubbs that the other team knocked down must be thrown to the first team’s side by their opponent. They are then set upright in the areas where they were tossed.

As long as the baseline Kubb is still standing, it will be restored to its upright position after being knocked down by an opponent. If a kubb is thrown out of play, a player is allowed another chance to throw it. “Punishment Kubbs,” as they are known, can be placed anywhere on the field of play, even if the kubb does not move out of bounds.
The procedure repeats itself with the second team taking the field. One of the teams can move their batons up to this point as long as they knock down all the kubbs on the field in their turn. The play continues until all of the opposing team’s field and baseline kubbs are knocked down by one team.
Kubb Game Goal: Go After the King
There are still batons left for the team to take on King kubb at this time. The winning side is the one that successfully knocks the King to the ground. It is impossible to win the game by knocking out all of your open
ent’s Kubbs before knocking out all of your opponents’ Kubbs with a baton or a kubb.
The squad advances to the tournament by winning two of the three tournament matches.
Where Can I Buy a Kubb Set?
In the 1980s, Tubb sets began to be mass-produced, and the sport’s popularity around the world skyrocketed. Leagues, competitions, and clubs have been formed as a result of the increasing popularity of Kubb.
It’s possible to get designs online for making your own Kubb set, but it’s time-consuming. From $15.00 to $75.00, you may get a wooden Kubb set. A personal favourite of ours.
For people who enjoy playing games, the Kubb Lawn Game is a wonderful Christmas present.
The National Kubb Championship & Other Tournaments
The U.S. National Kubb Championship was established in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in 2007. It was the only Kubb Tournament in the United States at the time. Throughout 2016, the number of competitions has increased to 40. There were 128 teams and 450 players in all at the National Championship. A total of 24 teams and over 60 individuals participated in the Kid’s Kubb division. Kubb is a popular game to play in Wisconsin school gym classrooms. There is a two-day National Kubb Championship in the United States every year.

It isn’t just the United States that hosts competitions: tournaments are hosted across Europe every year.
Kubbnation Magazine
There is a Kubbnation Magazine dedicated solely to the sport of the game. The inaugural edition of the magazine was published in January 2011. The publication, which is limited to a single issue each year, features articles on both leisure and competitive Kubb. There are usually interviews with players and Kubb champions, suggestions for play, reviews of various Kubb sets, information on clubs and teams, as well as forthcoming competitions. Collectors’ cards of famous Kubb players have been printed by the magazine.

Kubb
“Kubb unites people and provides harmony to the Earth,” is the company’s motto. This is a lovely phrase that captures the essence of Kubb’s guiding principles.
It’s simply a game, nothing more. Sporting competition, but not a mean-spirited competition; a game for family and friends to play together. Perhaps the world would be a better place if we all saw it through the eyes of Kubb players.
Good outdoor games encourage social interaction and foster a strong sense of community. Kubb is a good choice. Try it out if you haven’t yet!
