Kate Moss Breaks Her Silence on Testifying in Johnny Depp’s Defamation Trial

Kate Moss revealed what gave her the confidence to testify in ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against Amber Heard.

In May, the British supermodel testified as a rebuttal witness on behalf of Depp to contradict claims that he shoved her down a flight of stairs. She is very secretive and rarely grants public interviews. Moss answered questions about why she testified in the trial by saying she felt forced to speak the truth during a recent interview on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs.

When asked about the trial involving Depp and Heard, she brought up her friend John Galliano, a former Dior designer who was convicted of anti-Semitic assault in 2011 after he spewed public obscenities at a club in Paris. “I believe in the truth and I believe in fairness and justice,” Moss declared. “John Galliano is not a horrible person, that much is clear to me. People avoided him because of his drinking issue.”

“She said, “I know the truth about Johnny, and I know that people aren’t who they normally are when they’ve been drinking. As far as I’m aware, he never tried to kick me down the stairs. I’m sorry, but the truth needed to be said.”

Through the course of the trial, Heard accused Depp of physical, verbal, and sexual assault, telling the jury that her ex-husband often got agitated while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She testified about the first time she struck Depp, claiming self-defense, and in the process, she implied that Depp had forced Moss down a flight of stairs.

After thinking of Kate Moss and the stairs, Heard testified, “I swung at him.” “Thus far in my relationships, I had never [dealt] a physical blow. This time I smacked him across the face.” Moss was able to testify because of the citation. Moss, who dated Depp between 1994 and 1998, said in a video deposition that Depp “never shoved me, kicked me, or threw me down any steps.”

“We were leaving the room, and Johnny exited the room before I did,” Moss testified, describing an incident that occurred during the two men’s Jamaican holiday. “A storm had just passed through, leaving behind a lot of rain. I was leaving the room when I slipped and fell down the stairs, injuring my back and making a horrible noise since I was in so much pain and couldn’t figure out what had happened to me. He returned quickly to assist me; he brought me back to my room and arranged for medical treatment.”

Earlier this year, a Fairfax County, Virginia jury found that Heard willfully and maliciously defamed Depp in a 2018 op-ed she penned for the Washington Post in which she discussed her experiences as a survivor of domestic violence. The judge initially awarded Depp $5 million in punitive damages and $10 million in compensatory damages but then decreased the punitive penalties to the maximum allowed by Virginia law ($350,000). A modest $2 million in compensatory damages was awarded to Heard in his countersuit triumph.

Last Monday, Heard’s legal team appealed the decision by filing a motion. In a statement, the actress’s camp claimed, “We feel the court made errors that prohibited a just and fair verdict compatible with the First Amendment.” “Which is why we’re challenging the decision. Even though we know today’s filing will set Twitter on fire, we must take these measures to ensure fairness and justice for all parties involved.”
