Islanders Boys Lacrosse Defeats Mt. Carmel, Hosts Cif Semis May 18th @ 7:00pm & About!

Islander boys lacrosse is one of the most storied and decorated sports in Coronado Athletics history, with numerous CIF and league championships littered throughout the years. The Islander boys lacrosse team kicked off their CIF title defence on Saturday, May 14th.

To begin the CIF D1 playoffs, the Islanders faced the Mt. Carmel Sun Devils, a team they’d already beaten earlier in the season. The Islanders advanced to the CIF semi-finals with an 11-10 victory in front of a packed house.

The Islanders made a strong start to the game in the first quarter. Landon Sutherland and Neil Capin scored the Islanders’ first two goals on low heaters just four minutes apart. Mount Carmel quickly responded with three goals of their own to reclaim the Islanders’ lead and take a commanding 3-2 advantage.

The Islanders would retake the lead almost as quickly as Mt. Carmel had retaken it. A steal and a groundball by Vinton Garden set up Matthew Tetzlaff, who connected with Charley Kobets to level the game at 3-3.

At the end of the first quarter, the Islanders had a 4-3 lead thanks to Robby Spane’s drop and Finley Alexander’s goal, which made it a 5-3 Islander lead.

The first-period flurry of goals made it appear as if we were in the midst of a goal-scoring frenzy. The second quarter, on the other hand, was a marked contrast. Emmett Warner, Gardon, Jonah York, and Truett Smith all played lockdown defence for the Islanders, limiting the opposition’s opportunities to score.

In the second period, Islander Goalie Charlie Lang put on a clinic in the net, making five or more saves and allowing only one goal.

There seemed to be an opportunity for the Islanders to put some distance between themselves and Mount Carmel in the second quarter of the matchup. In the second quarter, the Islanders offence managed just one goal despite several high-quality shots.

The goal was scored by Robby Spane, who fired a shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Islanders a 5-4 lead at the half.

In the second quarter, the Islanders’ offence went on a brief hiatus, but returned in force in the third. The Islanders scored three goals in the first five minutes of play.

Neil Capin put two of them away with some beautiful finishes, and both times he beat the goalies with wraparounds. The Islanders went on a 3-0 run to take an 8-4 lead with 3:32 left in the third.

Mt. Carmel, on the other hand, did not give up. In the final three minutes of the third quarter, the Sun Devils staged a 4-0 rout, tying the game at 8-8, and heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, both teams traded goals to keep the score tied at nine, but the Islanders’ defence forced a turnover with 6:52 left in the game, and the offence quickly sprung into action. During the Sun Devils’ transition attack, Tetzlaff set up Maximus Kieffer, who scored a goal to make it 10-9.

With 3:57 remaining, the Islanders’ defence once again came through, this time thanks to a turnover caused by Warner. Once again, it was Neil Capin who found the back of the net to give the Islanders an 11-9 lead with 1:57 to go in the game.

With just 50 seconds remaining, Mt. Carmel scored a goal and then won the next drop, making things even more difficult. Once again, the Islanders’ defence stepped up, forcing two errant shots to secure the 11-10 win.
