Little, who will turn 85 later this year, has been entertaining audiences with his celebrity impressions for decades. For the past seven years, he has been performing regularly at the Laugh Factory comedy club, located on the third level of the showroom at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. The legendary impressionist will continue his autobiographical one-man show, “Rich Little Live,” into the new year, appearing four times a week.

Little, speaking from his home in Nevada, said, “Originally, I planned to be there only a couple of weeks, but it just took off. I’m doing shows at 6:30 p.m. Sundays through Wednesdays now.”
The longtime resident entertainer has many happy memories in the city of Las Vegas. The world’s biggest hotel, the MGM Grand, is right across the street from the Tropicana. This is where Little filmed the famous “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” TV show in the 1970s and early 1980s. On each of the more than 50 episodes, Martin and a panel of celebrities, including Little, would “roast” a special guest.
“I look back on those Dean Martin Roasts – and I did 24 of them – with much affection,” said Little. “Aside from Ruth Buzzi, I’m the only regular from the show who is still alive. I’m blessed to still be working.”
The 2016 semi-autobiographical book “Little by Little: People I’ve Known and Been” by Little has been revised as well.
“I added new chapters, including one about Don Rickles, who died a few years ago. I also fixed some mistakes and gave it a new cover,” Little said. “I also mention a lot of other people I didn’t talk about the first time around. It’s not really a biography, but rather a collection of the funny things that have happened with me and the celebrities I’ve known through the years.”
Little, a Canadian native, credits Mel Tormé with breaking him into the U.S. entertainment scene when Tormé got him a slot on “The Judy Garland Show” in early 1964. Garland’s spontaneous happiness when Little did impressions of Jimmy Stewart, James Mason, and others was contagious, and the rookie comedian was soon named the best Hollywood impressionist.
Little started out as a guest star on TV shows. He later became a fan favorite on the “Roasts,” where he shared the spotlight with many of his entertainment heroes, like Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Gene Kelly, Norm Crosby, and Joey Bishop.
“Gary does a great job of helping the troops, so I’m happy to do it,” said Little, who was also happy to hear that his home country was giving him an award.
“I will get the Order of Canada, which is given to Canadians who have made important contributions to our country throughout their lives,” said Little with pride. “But I don’t know when the ceremony will be. I guess they found out I was still alive and decided to give it to me! I am a citizen of both Canada and the United States. I became an American citizen about ten years ago.”

According to Little, “When I said in Wayne’s voice, ‘I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, pilgrim’ the judge ‘fell over’ – he just loved that.”
Even audiences still love Little. He explained that he mostly attracts an older audience since they are the ones who “know who” Dean Martin, Johnny Carson, John Wayne, and George Burns are.
Little tells the story of a teenager who was sitting in the front row and laughing hysterically through an entire show. “I knew he couldn’t know all these people, so I asked him about it later. His exact words were, “Mr. Little, you’re hysterical, but I was perplexed why you kept changing your voice!”
Little is also known for his impressions of presidents, especially Reagan and Nixon. He has recently added Biden to his act, but he doesn’t do Trump or Obama. Even though he has never said anything mean, he knows that modern political humor can be divisive.
He explains that unlike 30 or 40 years ago, “people are more sensitive now and everything has to be politically acceptable,” making it more difficult to imitate politicians in the present day.
