At The Gershwin Prize Event, Joni Mitchell Sang Summertime

As stated by The Washington Post, Joni Mitchell performs Summertime at the Gershin Prize Event which was utterly profound.

Contemporaries like James Taylor and Herbie Hancock, as well as fans like Brandi Carlile and Diana Krall, pay tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter by performing their own renditions of Mitchell’s classics on PBS special, Joni Mitchell: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

Some of them are “Carey” by Marcus Mumford, “River” by Herbie Hancock and Ledisi, and “Help Me” by Angélique Kidjo. Mitchell herself, who had mainly stopped performing in the last two decades, stunned the crowd with a clear and rich rendition of “Summertime” by George Gershwin at last year’s Newport Folk Festival.

Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, said of Mitchell’s music, “Joni Mitchell’s music hits you straight to the heart, down to your soul. You can say she has truly helped all of us look at both sides now.” You can see the official tweet by Joni Mitchell below.

Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, the late songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Carole King, and Smokey Robinson are just some of the artists who have won the Gershwin Prize in the past.

“I’m a creative person. I like the creative process,” Mitchell said in a statement. “I’ve been a painter all my life. I’ve been a musician most of my life. If you can paint with a brush, you can paint with words. … It’s a great honor to join the pantheon of recipients.”
