Gohan

As one of the series’ main protagonists, the half-Saiyan Son Gohan (, Son Goha, Japanese: [sgoh]) is an iconic figure in the Dragon Ball franchise. He is the oldest child of the show’s protagonists, Goku and Chi-Chi, as well as the nephew of Raditz, older brother of Goten, husband of Videl, and father of Pan. He takes his name from Gohan, Goku’s adopted grandfather.

Gohan, unlike his father, doesn’t enjoy fighting (though he does have a lot of strength within him) and only gets violent when he feels his loved ones are in danger. However, Gohan spends a significant portion of his life defending Earth alongside the Dragon Team.

Appearance

Gohan looks just like his dad, with the same hair, face, and dark eyes. Similarly, his light peach skin tone comes from his mother rather than his father. Gohan also took after his dad by inheriting a Saiyan tail, lengthy and prehensile with brown fur. Throughout his childhood, it was cut off and let grow back several times before being permanently removed by Vegeta during their first combat.

He was introduced to us as a young youngster with short, spiky hair that was still quite well-kept. In addition to the Hanfu-style top that was yellow with green sleeves and on the front his family name, ‘Son,’ inscribed in kanji within a giant white circle with black lining, he donned a white sleeveless shirt, green leggings, and black boots with white lacing. In addition, he was donning a red cap with the Four-Star Dragon Ball embroidered on the peak. When he is ready to train with Piccolo, he takes off the Hanfu-style top to reveal his attire.

After Piccolo loses his clothes when he transforms into a Great Ape, he trains with Goku in an original-style gi and belt, undershirt, wristbands, and boots, all in orange with black lashing and black with yellow detailing. In the anime, he wears the same uniform as Piccolo: a purple gi with a red ribbon and armbands, golden grass shoes, and a white collar. At the same time, his hair began to spread out into a shoulder-length mullet and he began to wear the ‘Ma’ symbol (). During the battle against the Saiyans, Gohan develops impressive muscle mass for a child and dresses as the Namekians do. His hair was white, and he wore a white bandana.

Gohan’s hair is short and styled into three thick fringes. Gohan’s private elementary school uniform is first shown in the series, followed by his Namekian attire when he arrives on Namek with Krillin and Bulma. Gohan’s Confrontation Armor comprised of a blue jumpsuit, white gloves and boots, white torso protection, and yellow shoulder pads, all of which Vegeta provided him before the battle with Frieza.

His long hair reached his thighs towards the end of the Androids Saga, and he added black kung-fu shoes and white shins to his Namekian garb. Wearing a version of the Battle Armor from Planet Namek without shoulder pads, he trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. When he emerges from the Time Chamber, he has grown significantly (to about Krillin’s height), shaved the back of his head, and developed very strong muscles for his young age.

For the Cell Games, he dons Piccolo’s outfit once again, complete with the white cloak and heavy shoulder pads. At this point, his hair takes on a Goku-like spiky appearance. Bojack Unbound’s Gohan wears an outfit that is an identical replica of the one Goku wore throughout the Androids Saga and the Majin Buu Saga.

He eventually matures into adulthood in which he shares his father’s height. A single bang hangs over the right side of his forehead, while the rest of his hair is cut short and erect. His lack of dedication to his training has left him visibly thinner and frailer than before, albeit still respectably muscular. Gohan, like his father before him, is widely praised by women like Erasa and Angela for his good looks. He wears a blue gi as Piccolo wore, a school uniform, and his Great Saiyaman outfit. His shin guards, obi, and wrist bands are all red while he wears his blue gi, but in Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming, he wears white ones instead.

During the Buu Saga, Kibito dresses him in traditional Kai garb. After defeating Kid Buu, Gohan and Vegeta reunite, and Gohan fights Super Buu in an identical suit to his father’s. For the celebration of Goku’s victory over Kid Buu, he dresses formally in a blue suit.

Gohan’s hairstyle at the end of Dragon Ball Z would mirror his appearance during the Buu Arc, sans the bang that echoes Yamcha’s hairdo in the Androids Saga. Gohan wears a blue vest over a long white undershirt and brown pants with black shoes in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods.

Gohan’s frail appearance in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’/Dragon Ball Super stems from his decision to retire from fighting and the consequent lack of physical preparation. His hair is considerably flatter and smoother now. In his pursuit of a professorial career, Gohan frequently dons a grey collar shirt, blue vest, and red slacks. Frieza arrives on Earth wearing a green tracksuit instead of his traditional gi since he can’t remember where he put it. Once Gohan gets back into training with Piccolo, he’ll slick back his hair to give it those spiky ends again.

To the point that he was just as muscular as Goku by the time of the Tournament of Power, Gohan had reconditioned his body through training with Piccolo. When he was in battle mode, he would smooth his hair back and take off his glasses. Additionally, in the anime, Gohan wears the same style of gi he wore against Super Buu, whereas in the manga, he wears a gi very identical to what he wore at the Cell Games, without the white cape and shoulder pads.

Gohan wears the Piccolo outfit again in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, complete with a white cape and shoulder pads, and eyeglasses. Should the going get tough during battle, he can also take off the white cape, shoulder pads, and glasses. In addition, the sneakers he’s wearing are reminiscent of those he wore throughout the Cell arc, and he now has black wristbands instead of red or blue ones. He also seems to have grown a tad more hair.

His hairdo from the final episode of Dragon Ball Z is carried over into Dragon Ball GT, with the exception that it is now a tad longer and is swept up completely, without any hanging bangs. He often appears in the company of others dressed in suits and ties, as though he were a professor or businessman. He also uses glasses, but it seems that he only needs them for reading; when in combat, he didn’t seem to have any trouble seeing without them. Gohan wears a gi similar to that worn by Goku in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super when he fights Syn Shenron.

Despite his protestations to the contrary, Gohan is a huge fan of martial arts and exciting new adventures, just like his father. It’s also obvious that he takes pleasure in his extraordinary abilities, especially when putting them to use in his superhero role. His desire to remain anonymous led to the development of the Great Saiyaman persona; he is not a fan of the spotlight and the attention it brings.

Even more so when you consider that Mr. Satan erroneously gave credence to his claim that he defeated Cell, and that Cell never publicly acknowledged his defeat at his hands. Although he despises senseless violence, he does enjoy fighting as a sport, as he admitted during the Zeno Expo by saying that his Saiyan half was getting excited from the challenge shown by Top of Universe 11. Gohan may have developed negative feelings toward fighting as a result of the many bloody and painful battles he witnessed as a young boy.

Even though Gohan is exceptionally bright, modest, and charitable by nature, he has occasionally been a victim of his strength. In both his first encounter as a Super Saiyan 2 against Cell and his later encounter with Super Buu in his Ultimate form, Gohan displayed arrogance and cockiness, essentially becoming drunk in his power, acknowledging and even enjoying his superiority over his opponents. This fatal flaw in his warrior personality could be an inevitable byproduct of his Saiyan heritage, as other Saiyans like Vegeta and Nappa have been known to display similar behavior when intoxicated by their power.

This has put him in perilous situations on multiple occasions, including when his father was killed by Cell and when Super Buu absorbed him, putting the entire universe in jeopardy. But with Piccolo’s help, Gohan is working to overcome this weakness, so that he will never again be blinded by his superior might in battle.

Gohan is dedicated to his family and his academics, but he also has a deep connection to his tutor, Piccolo, his father’s worst enemy. After Goku’s death, Piccolo decided to train Gohan since he could tell the boy had tremendous latent potential that, if developed, could help protect Earth from the Saiyan invasion. Piccolo is initially intimidating, but after befriending Gohan for a year, he acknowledges he’s changed and ultimately sacrifices himself to protect the youngster from Nappa. Gohan has started to publicly regard Piccolo as a sort of uncle figure.

Since Krillin is Goku’s best friend, he also has a significant impact on Gohan, almost in the role of uncle to nephew. Gohan, like his father, loves his mother but lives in fear of Chi-Chi’s temper to the point where, in Dragon Ball Super, he reveals to Chi-Chi that Goku plans to leave to train under Whis, saying that he had to tell her for his safety. Thankfully, Chi-Chi surprisingly calmed down after Goku left with Whis. Gohan’s mother refuses to let him travel to Namek to revive Piccolo with the Namekian Dragon Balls because she blames him for his brother’s death at Nappa’s hands. However, Gohan is willing to disobey his mother if it’s for a good cause.

Gohan abandons his martial arts training after his battle with Cell to focus on his schoolwork; his younger brother Goten is the one who convinces him to pick it back up. Gohan fought Majin Buu with all he had, even though he was out of shape and lacked the fighting skills of his father and Vegeta. Gohan was determined to get revenge on Buu for the deaths of his loved ones. Even as he built a career and a family, he never stopped training intermittently. He has a daughter named Pan with his wife Videl, whom he marries even though she is Mr. Satan’s daughter. It becomes clear that Gohan is a devoted husband and father who takes great pleasure in showering his daughter with love and care.

While Gohan is shy around girls his age, he shows interest in girls like Videl, and he is more respectful of women and girls than his father was at the same age because of his mother’s influence. Despite his good-natured personality, he can be just as oblivious as his father when it comes to romantic matters, as evidenced by the time he suggested Videl cut her hair for practical reasons, but she assumed it was because he preferred girls with short hair and angrily told him off when she learned the truth, all the while secretly developing a crush on him and mistaking his obliviousness as a sign that he wasn’t interested, though she later followed his advice.

Despite this, he gradually acquired affection for Videl after spending time with her and was so outraged by Spopovich’s cruel treatment of her that he lost his control and had to do everything he could to keep from disrupting the bout by transforming into a Super Saiyan.

He was so committed to exacting revenge on Spopovich that he entered the event expecting to win and instead watched as Spopovich was killed by Babidi. In the same vein, Gohan hid his part in defeating Cell from her and her father out of respect, only revealing it during the conflict with Majin Buu, at which point she was relieved because she had always secretly doubted the veracity of her father’s claims. This only served to strengthen her feelings for Gohan because he was so modest about his achievement and never sought to profit from his defeat of Cell, even though he could have easily refuted M. Bison.

Gohan Vs Broly

Broly Introduction

Broly, the son of Paragus, is a powerful Saiyan mutant. He is the most recent of the demonic Saiyan warriors known as Legendary Super Saiyans, who come once per millennium in Universe 7. King Vegeta banished him to the planet Vampa, where his father nurtured him until he was rescued by Cheelai and Lemo of the Frieza Force 41 years later. His strength level was claimed to surpass that of Prince Vegeta. He’s the movie’s principal adversary, but he’s also the movie’s protagonist, albeit an erroneous one.

To distinguish between him and his Dragon Ball Z movie counterpart, he is commonly referred to as Broly: BR in video games and other media.

Broly Biography

Having a power level of 10,000, Broly entered the world in the year 732, about the same time as Prince Vegeta IV.  He was raised on Planet Vegeta until he was exiled there by King Vegeta III, who was jealous and suspicious because Broly was more promising than his son, Prince Vegeta. It was also hinted that Broly saw the planet’s moon upon waking from the landing, which drove him completely bananas and caused him to become full ape very quickly after their arrival.

During his time there, he was visited by a gigantic beast named Ba. Broly would repeatedly engage in a sparring match with Ba, dodging its assaults until he eventually became friendly with it. As Paragus saw it, this setback was detrimental to Broly’s evolution, so he shot the beast, severing its ear in the process. Ba left after this and decided to never trust Broly again. It was decided that he would wear the severed ear as a green pelt (akin to a sash) as a constant reminder that he and Ba would always be together. Later on, while he was still eating, he saw a glimpse of a shooting star (really Kakarot’s attack ball) zipping by.

Broly Personality

This incarnation of Broly has a personality that is drastically different from his counterpart. While his counterpart displayed the typical Saiyan characteristics and was outright psychotic with a split personality disorder that would randomly turn him into a sadistic and maniacal killer, this Broly retained a more sane and honorable personality in comparison with the rest of his race due to his relatively less tragic background.

Due to his upbringing on an inhospitable planet living only with his father and no other sentient being, Broly is a quiet man with little social skills or manners, demonstrated when he thanked Cheelai only if Paragus reminded him to do so. His limited education has left him somewhat naïve to normal society, showing a noticeable caveman-like fascination with the various comforts and advances it has to offer, particularly eating better quality food (curiously though, he is aware of how to operate a shower stall onboard Frieza’s ship). While his social skills aren’t well-developed, Broly’s intuition is quite acute.

He’s able to sense when someone is agitating a comrade and visibly reflects their anger, as seen when he defended Cheelai from a sleazy soldier and when Paragus’s anger goes towards Vegeta, Broly’s rage boiled over.

As noted by many, for all of Broly’s unprecedented talent for battle and sheer power, he is a peaceful man who doesn’t desire to fight except for those he cares about or when his Saiyan blood is fully aroused. Rather, Broly is, by nature, very kind-hearted, sentimental, and quite friendly once his trust is earned, as he greatly values all companionships he experiences, traits considered extremely rare in Saiyans; he also has a very formal speech pattern at times, as when Paragus tells him to thank Cheelai for some food, rather than giving a simple “Thanks”, he responds “Thank you very much, I am grateful”. Broly was shown to be fiercely protective of Cheelai and Lemo, as shown when they were harassed by a Frieza Force soldier.

He also is appreciative of others’ kindness, giving Goku a warm smile after his fellow Saiyan promised to visit and often offering to teach him to fight, sparking both a soft rivalry and friendship, in sharp contrast to his counterpart, who has an intense pathological hatred of Goku.

As his father was the only companion he had for most of his life, Broly developed an “undying loyalty” and unconditional love toward his father despite the harsh training he put Broly through. Despite being pointed out by Cheelai and Lemo that his father probably only saw him as a weapon of revenge against King Vegeta, Broly nevertheless still cared deeply for Paragus and refused to speak ill about him; however, he does seem to have some limits when it comes to obeying his orders, as when a drunken Daigen flirted with Cheelai and shoved Lemo aside, Broly angrily confronted him while outright ignoring his father’s order to stand down.

On a similar note, when Super Saiyan God Goku attempted to talk Broly down from fighting, it seemed like Broly was going to calm down, only for him to promptly punch Goku in the face after the latter ended up calling Paragus a bad guy owing to his being defensive towards his father’s honor. The depth of his love towards his father is shown later on, as the sight of Paragus’ corpse made him explode in grief and rage (as well as horror at the possibility that he might have accidentally killed him thanks to Frieza falsely claiming that he had been killed a stray ki blast while he was fighting Goku), transforming him into a Legendary Super Saiyan.

This is a key difference between him and his counterpart, who indifferently bashed out his father’s left eye during one of his rampages, and was later shown to be laughing maniacally while crushing him to death.

At the same time, for all of his genuine gentleness, similar to his counterpart, Broly has a vicious and animalistic side to him. As his emotions are directly connected to his power, when he exerts himself enough or is provoked, he enters a berserker state. As Broly goes deeper into his power, his sanity starts to fray and he starts to have trouble comprehending instructions from his father while progressively becoming more violent.

However, whereas his counterpart becomes an amoral and blood-lusting sadist, Broly becomes more of a feral beast with little rationality, although Broly does show some moments of brief arrogance and borderline sadistic pleasure. When he reaches the initial Legendary Super Saiyan state due to the death of Paragus, his mindset boils down to “kill everything that moves”.

For instance, during his battle with Goku and Vegeta, when the two of them flew by Frieza and quickly zipped away, Broly forgot all about trying to kill the two Saiyans and instead began beating Frieza to death, despite the tyrant ostensibly being Broly’s ally, then targeted Whis, a mere spectator, when the latter called out. He became so mentally unstable that the only known way to non-fatally subdue him was to invoke the fear of death.

It is suggested by Goku that Broly can control himself if he receives the proper training, presumably like his Universe 6 counterpart and fellow Legendary Saiyan Kale whom Goku had previously fought during the Tournament of Power before meeting Broly. Similar to his original counterpart, however, Broly did retain a small amount of rationality in his madness, since it is implied that he let Frieza live after beating him for an entire hour simply because the latter no longer had any fight left in him

Additionally, thanks to the shock collar his father made, Broly suffers from PTSD. This is shown when, upon meeting Frieza for the first time, after Paragus pulls out the remote to explain how the collar reigns him in, Broly starts panicking, his eyes widen, and he backs away a bit as he begins pulling on the collar in a desperate attempt to remove it.

Although Broly tends to be very wild with his anger, being borderline animalistic when succumbing to rage, he is capable of expressing his rage in a more subdued manner. This is especially evident when Daigen was harassing Cheelai and Lemo (even beating up the latter), causing Broly to quiver with evident rage and attempt to calmly reply to the soldier’s question that he did indeed have a problem with the soldier abusing his friends.
