Virginia “Ginny” Bates Dean and Edgar “Ed” Henry Dean were Dean’s parents. Dean has two younger siblings. Two years after they first met, Parton and Dean got married. 30 May 1966 marks their anniversary. They drove to Ringgold, Georgia to get married on Memorial Day. Only Parton’s mother, Avie Lee, the preacher, and his wife were there.
Dean’s mother, who had initially hoped for a lavish wedding, was delighted to see her son get married. Carl’s mother was “heartbroken,” Parton remembered, since her record company, Monument Records, wanted the singer to postpone her marriage for a year in order to advance her career. Therefore, Parton and Dean made the decision to wed immediately rather than wait. In order to avoid having their wedding covered by Tennessee publications, they said their vows in Georgia.
