When Exactly Did Jeff Bezos And MacKenzie Separate?
After a “long period” of separation, Bezos and his wife MacKenzie announced their divorce on January 9, 2019. They announced their split after 25 years of marriage in a joint statement posted to social media.
Their tweet said, “We want to make people aware of a change in our lives. As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends.”
“We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other. If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.”
“We’ve had such a great life together as a married couple, and we also see wonderful futures ahead, as parents, friends, partners in ventures and projects, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures.”
Bezos retained 75% of the couple’s Amazon stock when the divorce was finalized on April 4, 2019, while MacKenzie received the remaining 25%, or $35.6billion.
Mackenzie’s second marriage was publicly revealed in March 2021. She married Dan Jewett, a chemistry teacher at the high school where her kids are enrolled. Mr. Jewett and Ms. Mackenzie’s wedding was announced in a post on The Giving Pledge, a website where the famous and wealthy pledge to donate the vast majority of their fortunes over the course of their lives.
According to Mr. Jewett, “it is strange to be writing a letter indicating I plan to give away the majority of my wealth during my lifetime, as I have never sought to gather the kind of wealth required to feel like saying such a thing would have a particular meaning.”
