In his rookie season, he placed fourth and was honoured as McLaren Autosport’s Young Driver of the Year. In his first season (1994) in the British Formula 3 Championship, Dario won one race and was fourth overall. In 1997, Dario Franchitti made his CART Championship Series debut with Hogan Racing. Dario’s 2000 season was derailed by a major accident during pre-season testing, and he lost a close friend, Greg Moore, in a deadly accident at the final race of 1999 at California Speedway.

In 2001, he won in Cleveland, and in 2002, he won the Vancouver Molson Indy and dedicated it to his friend Greg, a native of nearby Maple Ridge, British Columbia.
