Dannielynn Birkhead And Larry Birkhead Attend The 2023 Kentucky Derby

Dannielynn Birkhead and her father, Larry Birkhead, are at the Kentucky Derby in 2023. Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter, now 16 years old, and her father, Larry, 50, attended the 149th annual celebration on Saturday.

Dannielynn donned a Leo Lin dress with a sunflower motif and a crystal necklace and bracelet that belonged to her mother. “To be honest, the dress was so big I had to drive it from Florida, because it was too big to go on the plane and check it in. So this was a full-on production,” Larry said.

The photographer’s light blue suit went well with his daughter’s white clothing. He accessorized with a sunflower pin and a yellow tie to finish off the ensemble.

Photos of Larry, Dannielynn, and Richie Sambora—who taught the adolescent how to play guitar—were posted to Instagram by Larry. “Rockin’ the rest of @kentuckyderby … with Richie Sambora and Dannielynn,” he captioned the post. “Richie graciously made good on his offer to give Dannielynn a private guitar lesson and spent a ton of time giving her confidence building tips and mastering the art of playing the guitar. Great guy!”

Larry continued, “Dannielynn played a little @janetjackson ‘Black Cat’ for him. Now off to the @kentuckyderby after the Barnstable-Brown Gala last night.”

The Kentucky Derby is an annual tradition for Dannielynn and Larry. The first Saturday in May always marks the start of the horse racing season at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Previous to this, on Friday night, they had attended the Barnstable Brown Gala, a fundraiser for the Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center at the University of Kentucky.

Now that they always show up, Larry told PEOPLE, “The stakes are always high with these outfits.  People come to me and ask, ‘What is Dannielynn wearing? Are you going to match?’ The problem is the dresses keep getting more expensive!”

Larry continued by saying that he keeps his daughter’s Derby attire forever.  “There’s a whole storage bin devoted to all of her Derby dresses from when she was a baby,” he says. “And everything she has of her mom’s is cataloged in storage, with photos of the event where she wore it. So someday, she can give them to her kids if she wants to.”

The doting father shared a touching note with Dannielynn on Instagram, along with a photo collage of her through the years.
