Black Quarterbacks Face Discrimination, Say Former West Virginia University Stars Major Harris And Spencer Paysinger

As reported by The Daily Athenaeum, Major Harris and Spencer Paysinger, two former West Virginia University football stars, say that racism is an issue for black quarterbacks.

Black History Month came to a close on Tuesday at the Center for Black Culture and Research with a panel discussion including Spencer Paysinger, the subject of the television series “All American,” and former West Virginia quarterback Major Harris.

The recent rise to prominence of ex-West Virginia player Geno Smith and other Black quarterbacks in the NFL prompted the panellists to address the stereotypes that persist when it comes to Black athletes holding positions of leadership on the field.

The discussion, conducted in the Mountainlair’s Rhododendron Room, was led by current linebacker Jairo Faverus.

Paysinger started things off by noting that prejudice against Black quarterbacks goes back to the early days of football, when it was thought that Black players weren’t “smart enough” to take on the position. Paysinger explained the stereotype as the belief that a Black quarterback cannot perform under the stress of being the team’s leader.

Since black athletes didn’t have the same chances as white athletes, football positions were filled by people who fit a certain stereotype. Paysinger said that white players were still a team’s best bet at middle linebacker, centre, and quarterback as recently as the 1970s.

Harris, a Black athlete at a predominately white university, discussed his time at West Virginia (1987–1989). Harris claimed he avoided colleges that had never had a Black quarterback because of the negative stereotypes associated with minorities in sports.

“I wasn’t looking at things like being a pioneer or being the first Black quarterback,” he said. “I was just out there having fun.” You can check the tweet below in which All-American is based off of the life of Spencer Paysinger, who played in the NFL.

During his career with the Mountaineers, Harris played for head coach Don Nehlen. Harris stated he found “father figures” among his Black coaches and mentors, despite the fact that the staff was overwhelmingly white.

Head coaches in both high school and professional football have historically been white. Harris said that the relationship between a white coach and a black athlete could have been awkward, which would have made the black quarterback even more of an outcast.

White coaches’ relationships with Black athletes have flourished in large part because of their emphasis on communication. Headsets weren’t used by coaches and offensive coordinators back in the day, thus they had to put all their faith in the quarterback to call the appropriate play.

Many white coaches did not fully trust Black athletes to lead their teams, despite the fact that trust is the cornerstone of a coach’s relationship with his or her players.

The evolution of the quarterback position in modern football has led to positive developments in the sport. In the past, quarterbacks were mostly expected to stand still and throw the ball. Now, quarterbacks use their ability to run, which has given Black quarterbacks more chances to play.

The media played a vital part in highlighting the achievements of Black quarterbacks throughout the 2022–2023 football season. The media can be a driver of stigma, despite its emphasis on the good impact these athletes have had on the game.

Paysinger claims that black athletes “have less grace” than white quarterbacks who may be less skilled. The media’s language and ignorance towards Black athletes contribute to the continuation of harsh perceptions about black athletes.

In the media, power comes from the top down, and most of the time, a white owner is in charge. A lack of minorities working “behind the scenes” in sports can also make it hard for people to understand them and give them a bad reputation.

Harris said that he wants more Black people to own professional sports teams because it “opens more doors for more Black coaches” and gives Black athletes better ways to get help.

Paysinger said that if the NFL became more “culturally united,” it would be “beautiful.” He thinks that football is going in the right direction because it has been getting better over the past few years. You may also see the official tweet by WVU CBCR below.

Paysinger said, “Where we are right now with Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes being the face of the league from now into the future. And having two young Black quarterbacks in the draft class this year … it’s only the beginning.”
