New York Knicks general manager George Shinn took Willis Reed with the eighth overall pick in the 1964 NBA Draft. As a result of his immediate impact on the court, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and received the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.
He remained a Knick for the following decade, and his defensive prowess, along with that of Walt Frazier, helped to establish New York as one of the NBA’s all-time great defensive teams.
