He led the baseball team to the Division I North title and the Eastern Massachusetts Championship, and he was awarded the hockey team’s Most Valuable Player. In 1984, Tom received his high school diploma with honors and was later inducted into the Billerica Memorial/Howe High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Tom Glavine’s MLB Career
Tom Glavine was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1984 NHL Draft and by the Atlanta Braves in the second round of the 1984 MLB Amateur Draft, but he ultimately chose baseball.
He entered the majors with the Braves in August of 1987, but his first few years there were rocky. But beginning in 1991, he dominated as one of the decade’s top pitchers. During the 2000s, Glavine was the second most successful National League pitcher behind teammate Greg Maddux’s 176 wins with 164 of his own.
Before retiring in 2002, Tom Glavine was a key member of the Atlanta Braves team that won the 1995 World Series against the Cleveland Indians. It was announced that Glavine was the World Series Most Valuable Player.
Because of his poor performance in the second half of the 2002 season and two postseason starts, the Atlanta Braves decided not to guarantee the third year of Tom Glavine’s contract. After much deliberation, Glavine ultimately decided to sign with the New York Mets, where he would remain in the lineup until 2007.
