Shadow And Bone Season 1 Recap

Brief Overview Of Shadow And Bone Season 1: The Last Stop In The Grishaverse

The second season of Shadow and Bone premieres on Netflix on March 16 with the debut of all eight episodes. Season 1 of the show, based on the novels by Leigh Bardugo, sets the stage by introducing the audience to the world, the characters, the Grisha system, and the political battles. That’s a lot of information to keep in mind for Season 2. Of course, a lot more will take place in Season 2, but it will all be a continuation of what we saw in Season 1.

Ravka, the setting of the story, is a kingdom divided in two by “the Fold,” a dark and dangerous tear in the core of the land that makes travel difficult. The Fold and Ravka’s tense relationships with its neighbours have necessitated a large military presence, which the country maintains through the First Army and the Second Army.

Grisha, who have unique skills, refer to them as “Small Science” rather than “magic” and make up the Second Army. Despite widespread mistrust and the fact that most citizens view Grisha as outsiders, the king of Ravka protects the Grisha.

Quickly into the show, we meet Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a young mapmaker for the First Army. She and Mal Oretsev, her lone childhood friend from the orphanage she grew up in, are posted near the edge of the Fold in East Ravka (Archie Renaux). Alina has to deal with prejudice because her mother is from Shu Han, another country viewed as an enemy by the people of Alina’s home country, Ravka.

Alina and Mal get hurt, and the party loses a lot of money. They come to just outside the Fold, and from there Alina is hurried off to see General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), the head of the Grisha. Kirigan is known as the Darkling because to his unique ability to manipulate darkness. Every child is tested to see if they have Grisha powers, but Alina didn’t show any. Kirigan re-examines Alina and comes to the conclusion that she possesses the Grisha gift of the Sun Summoner.

Many believe that the Fold may be destroyed by the legendary Sun Summoner ability, however this is just a myth. The Grisha immediately whisk her away to their training academy at the Little Palace. The Fjerdans, locals from the adjacent nation who think the Grisha are evil, ambush the carriage along the journey. Kirigan slashes the Fjerdan with darkness at the very last second, saving Alina in the process.
