Star guard Sabrina Ionescu underwent minor ankle surgery, according to the New York Liberty. The aim of the procedure was described in detail by Dr. Martin O’Malley:
“She had a minor ankle procedure to remove a loose bone chip that was irritating a tendon behind her ankle. This chip that occurred during her sprain in July, did not involve the ankle joint cartilage surface and we expect a complete recovery. The ligaments she tore during her injury have all completely healed and there was no need for an ankle ligament stabilization procedure.”
Ionescu stated that she is concentrating on getting ready for the WNBA season in 2021, however it is still unknown if the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2020 is thinking about moving abroad. In October, she informed reporters that she was considering it as a means to play some competitive games before the WNBA season returns.

Ionescu’s spectacular success at Oregon helped her make the transition to the professionals despite having almost unattainable expectations.
The 22-year-old finished with 33 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in just her second game. Ionescu’s debut season was unfortunately cut short by a Grade 3 left ankle sprain she sustained in an 84-78 loss to the Atlanta Dream on July 31, as reported by Bleacher Report. The Liberty only managed to win two games in the end, placing them bottom in the league.
With the hire of a new head coach (Walt Hopkins) and the launch of a rebrand to coincide with the team’s anticipated inaugural season at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, New York had already committed to a long-term rebuild.
