Right-wing Dating App Encourages Users to Discuss January 6th

The Right Stuff, a new “conservative dating app” that just came out, is getting its first reviews. And it doesn’t look good for the company that Peter Thiel put money into. Out of the 197 reviews for the app that is currently on the iOS store, nearly 60 give it only one star.

Some common complaints from reviewers are that there aren’t enough women on the app, that you can’t join because you need an invite and that answering a profile question about January 6 led to a call from the police.

About January 6, the app asks… I said I was there because, as a patriot, I was. “I get a call from an FBI agent the SAME DAY???” says one review from a user named “Big Chungus.” Another user says that after making a profile on Right Stuff, police officers went to their house and said they were “involved in domestic terrorism.”

In a milder complaint, one user says, “All the women on here have been replaced by doughy middle-aged white guys.” Problem that the company seemed to want to solve with its advertising by showing a “group of conservative young women” who are 100% real.

It’s important to note that many of these app store evaluations are clearly from trolls, and there’s no evidence to suggest that the FBI or any other law enforcement agency has really contacted Right Stuff users. Many of the criticisms leveled at the purported absence of women are also veiled in homophobia.

On the other hand, users are prompted to share their thoughts on January 6 in an open-ended way as part of the app, presumably to liven things up a bit. Gizmodo confirmed that the profile-building questionnaire asks this question. Even more uncomfortably, it’s not hard to picture folks present at the Capitol riot that day typing in information that would incriminate themselves into that blank white box.

In the days leading up to the attack on the Capitol on January 6th, Parler, a more prominent right-wing social media network, did in fact transmit proof and user information to the FBI (albeit the FBI reportedly did not heed those warnings). This kind of thing has happened before.

However, the FBI’s National Press Office emailed Gizmodo with the answer, “We have no comment to provide in response to your inquiry.” The FBI also provided a link to the D.C. District Attorney’s website, where a page details the investigation into and arrests made in relation to the uprising on January 6, 2021.

The accusations that users were contacted by the FBI or that we transmitted information to law authorities are absolutely incorrect, a representative from Right Stuff wrote in an email to Gizmodo.

As for why the app singles out January 6 for discussion, the developer explained: “Our prompts are meant as fun conversation openers where users may share their personalities through their thoughts.”

Finally, a spokeswoman for Right Stuff told Gizmodo, “The app is invite-only to ensure a high-quality community of conservative consumers,” responding to some of the more sincere-sounding, prevalent criticisms.
