Queen Elizabeth, the longest-reigning British monarch in history, died on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, surrounded by her family. Buckingham Palace announced that the 96-year-old died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
According to the Palace, the new King, Charles, and Queen Consort, Camilla, will remain at Balmoral this evening and return to London tomorrow. The announcement came just hours after the Queen’s doctors expressed concern about her health, and just a few days after she met with her 15th Prime Minister, Liz Truss.
Funeral Details
The Queen will be given a state funeral as monarch, which is expected to take place 12 days after her death. Specifics about the ceremony, which had been planned for decades, have yet to be formally announced, but it is expected that the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Church of England’s senior bishop, will preside over it. We will update this post as soon as more information becomes available. We will also include information about whether or not the ceremony will be broadcast or available to watch in the United States.
The United Kingdom will observe a 12-day period of mourning in the days leading up to the funeral, during which Queen Elizabeth’s body is expected to lie in state and the public will likely be able to pay their respects.
Charles ascended to the throne immediately after his mother died, but there is no set date for his coronation.
