I spent countless hours playing The Oregon Trail on our school’s Commodore 64 computer, which had beautiful 8-bit graphics. That you can play an online version of the original game made my adult heart leap with joy.

History Of The Real Oregon Trail
Manifest Destiny, or “the divinely ordained right of the United States to expand its borders to the Pacific Ocean and beyond,” was a popular belief among early Americans.
The US government offered free land to those willing to travel to ‘Oregon Country’ in order to expand our borders to the Pacific Ocean. On the Oregon Trail, pioneers faced a long and perilous trek overland to claim land.
They sold everything they owned to buy a waggon and supplies, then fled their homes and families to travel west with other pioneers for journeys that could last up to a year. Pioneers had to leave behind dressers, pianos, and other heavy furniture they couldn’t carry up the Oregon trail because they couldn’t be hauled up the mountain.
It took Pioneers four years to tame and improve their land in the Pacific Northwest after arriving in the area via the Oregon Donation Land Act, which was a generous gift from the state of Oregon.
320-acre parcels of Oregon land were initially made available to white male citizens under the Oregon Donation Land Act in 1843.
