Michelle Branch: Early Life, Career, Album, Musical Style, Filmography, Personal Life!

Michelle Jacquet DeSevren Branch is an actress, singer, and songwriter from the United States. She was born on July 2, 1983. The Spirit Room and Hotel Paper were two of her best-selling albums from the early 2000s. She won a Grammy Award with Santana for “The Game of Love” for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

In 2005, she joined forces with Jessica Harp to form the country music duo the Wreckers. Their song “Leave the Pieces” was nominated for a Grammy. The Wreckers broke up in 2007 so that each member could pursue a solo career. Since then, she’s put out two EPs in 2010 and 2011, and on April 7, 2017, she released her third solo album, Hopeless Romantic.

Early life

Branch was born in Sedona, Arizona, on July 2, 1983. His parents are David and Peggy Branch.  Her father is Irish, and her mother is of Dutch-Indonesian (“Indo”) and French heritage.  During World War II, her mom’s grandmother was held in a Japanese concentration camp. She moved to the Netherlands after the war, which is where Branch’s mother was born. When her mother was five, they moved to Arizona.

David is her older half-brother, and Nicole is the name of her younger sister.

Branch started singing when she was three years old. When she was eight, she took voice lessons at Northern Arizona University. When she turned 14, she got her first guitar as a gift.

[2][3][8] Within a week of getting her guitar, she taught herself how to play chords and wrote her first song, “Fallen.”  She went to Sedona Red Rock High School for her first two years of high school, but she finished the last two years of high school at home so she could focus on her music career.

Career

1983–2000: Broken Bracelet

Branch’s parents helped her get local gigs in Sedona and later paid for her independent album Broken Bracelet so she could do what she wanted.  She covered songs by Sheryl Crow, Lisa Loeb, Jewel, and Fleetwood Mac at these gigs.

In December 1999, she put up two of her songs on the Rolling Stone website. Both the pop rock band Hanson and the former Rolling Stone writer and Los Angeles record producer Jeff Rabhan took notice, which led to two opening gigs for Hanson in 2000.

Branch self-produced Broken Bracelet in June 2000. It was a collection of songs she had written since she was 14 years old. The album came out on the independent record label Twin Dragon Records.

It got its name from a bracelet made by pop singer Jewel that musician Steve Poltz gave to Branch at a Lisa Loeb concert. “When it breaks,” Poltz told Branch, “you’ll be famous.”  In May 2010, when Nashville was flooded, the Broken Bracelet recordings were lost.

2001–2005: The Spirit Room and Hotel Paper

Accidental script: There is no Listen module available. Branch’s major label debut and a recording contract with Maverick Records came in 2001 when she began collaborating with producer John Shanks. The album The Spirit Room was published in August of 2001, with the track “Everywhere” being a huge success.

This song was so popular that it took home the Viewer’s Choice Award at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards.  Singles “All You Wanted” and “Goodbye to You” followed “Everywhere” afterwards. In August of 2001, she made an appearance on Total Request Live after her song “Everywhere” had climbed to No. 4

In 2002, Branch collaborated with Santana, Gregg Alexander, and Rick Nowels to create “The Game of Love,” which was nominated for and won the Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

In 2003, she was nominated for a Grammy, but Norah Jones ended up taking home the trophy for Best New Artist.

Hotel Paper, Branch’s second album on a major label, was released in 2003 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA for sales of over one million copies.

The CD, however, received lukewarm reviews at best. The album’s debut track, “Are You Happy Now?,” was a commercial success and earned Branch a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance  which she ultimately lost to Pink for her performance of “Trouble.” The subsequent songs “Breathe” and “‘Til I Get over You” did not achieve the same level of success as the first. She then expanded into television, making appearances on shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, American Dreams, and Charmed. She co-hosted “Faking the Video” on MTV with Nick Lachey and JC Chasez in June of 2004. The Hot Chick, starring Rob Schneider, was another film in which she appeared.

2005–2007: The Wreckers

Branch’s collaboration with her longtime friend and backing singer Jessica Harp began in July of 2005.  Branch’s husband came up with the name “Cass County Homewreckers” as a joke, but they eventually shortened it to “the Wreckers.”  With this album, they tried to blend pop rock with country.

The pregnancy-related issues that caused the release to be pushed back from its planned June 2005 date are still being worked out.  Single “Leave the Pieces” by the pair was released in February 2006, followed by their debut album Stand Still, Look Pretty in May 2006.

During this time, they performed with country music superstars Rascal Flatts on a U.S. tour and contributed to Santana’s album All That I Am with the song “I’m Feeling You”. They also had an appearance on the American teen television drama One Tree Hill.

In the second season, they were also depicted as touring with Gavin DeGraw, Tyler Hilton, and Bethany Joy Galeotti.  The group’s performance of “Leave the Pieces” at the 2006 Grammy Awards was recognised as the Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and they were nominated for the 2006 CMA Awards Vocal Duo of the Year. As of March 2009, Stand Still, Look Pretty had sold 851,000 copies, earning a Gold certification from the RIAA. In 2007, the Wreckers disbanded.

Branch uprooted from her home in Calabasas, California, and settled in Nashville, Tennessee.

2008–2012: Unreleased albums

Afterwards, Branch penned an unreleased tune for Mandy Moore’s 2007 album Wild Hope[28] and “Together” for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 soundtrack; the latter was also the last song ever played on the CBS TV soap opera Guiding Light. After announcing her intention to release a new solo album in October 2007, it was later revealed that the working title would be Everything Comes and Goes. [2] Her sister Nicole provided vocal support during several live performances she gave in June 2008, leading up to the album’s release.

She appeared on Chris Isaak’s newest album, Mr Lucky, as a duet partner for the song “I Lose My Heart,” released at the beginning of 2009.

On July 28, 2009, a music video for the album’s lead track, “Sooner Or Later,” premiered online. In 2009, she also covered “A Case of You” (by Joni Mitchell) for the Warner Bros. Records 50th-anniversary compilation Covered, A Revolution in Sound. [30] In October 2009[31], a music video for the song “This Way” was posted on Branch’s official YouTube account. However, the song was never officially released as a single, and the video itself did not achieve any commercial success.

(You may find the clip on the website michellebranch.com; it was featured on a DVD compilation titled The Video Anthology.)  On July 16, 2010, a six-song EP titled Everything Comes and Goes was launched on Branch’s website and will be distributed at all shops one month later. [33] Pop/R&B single “Getaway,” co-written by Branch and R&B/hip-hop producer Timbaland, was released in 2010 along with a music video.

It was stated in December of 2010 that Branch’s upcoming album, West Coast Time, will feature more of her pop/rock roots.

As of early 2011, three unreleased tracks from Everything Comes and Goes had been made available by Branch. These were “Texas In the Mirror,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and “Long Goodbye,” a duet with Dwight Yoakam. On March 22, 2011, in a video about developments on the third studio album released on Branch’s YouTube account, Branch claimed that half of the album is ready and added that “it’s sounding very good….all it’s going great and it’s all on time.”

The album’s completion was confirmed on April 14, 2011, and Branch stated that “We’re down to finalising the mix and mastering now. Michelle has been working on a new album with the band Tilted Head and FIVE’s lead singer, Joshua Barton.” [38] Branch previewed her new track “Loud Music” in a live webchat with fans on May 26, 2011. The song was officially published on the iTunes Store on June 14, 2011.

Michelle Branch

Both Jim Irvin and Julian Emery, British songwriters who worked with Michelle on several tracks on the album, contributed to the writing and production of this song. During the webcast, Branch also revealed that “Through the Radio” will be a bonus track on the album, in addition to “Mastermind” and “The Story of Us.” A track from the album titled “Spark” was previewed in a prior webcast she hosted. During a live outdoor performance at the Warner Brothers building, she played another new song, dedicated to her then-husband Teddy Landau, “For Dear Life”.

In June 2011, she released the album’s first song named “Loud Music”. Adult Pop Songs has included it in their top 100. On July 12, 2011, Branch performed “God Bless America” at the MLB All-Star Game, in Phoenix, Arizona. Another Sun,” a new song released in September, was featured on the Fox television series Terra Nova.

On October 29, 2011, as part of the Gravedigger’s Ball, she performed for a small crowd of fans in the Egyptian Room in downtown Indianapolis. On December 12, 2011, Branch made available for free download on his official website a song named “If You Happen to Call.” [40]

She was nominated for “Pop” and “Greatest Female Artist of All Time” on VH1’s “100 Greatest Women in Music” special in February 2012. Branch and Kelly Clarkson performed “Leave the Pieces” on April 3, 2012, in Los Angeles as part of Clarkson’s Stronger Tour. The singer released her latest pop-rock single, “Mastermind,” on September 5. [41] The online cooking show Cook Taste Eat, hosted by Chef Michael Mina, welcomed Branch as a co-host in September 2012.

Like her previous album, Everything Comes and Goes, West Coast Time has been delayed multiple times for reasons that remain unclear. On her Twitter, Branch has acknowledged that her admirers are correct in their assumptions about her level of knowledge on this topic.

During an interview with Katie Krause of Hollywire.com in January 2011, Branch stated confidently that the album will be published later that year.  As of June 1st, 2011, Branch has confirmed that the album would be titled West Coast Time and will be released in September of the same year. Branch announced on December 25, 2012, that West Coast Time would be released in the spring of 2013, yet the album has yet to appear.

2013–present: New record deal and Hopeless Romantic

Much of 2013 was spent writing new songs as Branch moved past the unreleased West Coast Time and onto new projects. During a concert on November 5th, 2013, Branch announced that she had begun working on new material with producer Martin Terefe in London.  She announced on Twitter on February 2, 2014, that the remaining tracks of the album would be recorded in Nashville to achieve a pop-rock vibe. Template: Fix She covered “Creep” by Radiohead in October 2014, and the track was included in Season 1, Episode 2 of Stalker.

Branch revealed her new record deal with Verve on July 17, 2015.

[48] In May of 2016, she made an appearance on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee to perform “Goodbye Ted Cruz,” a parody of her song “Goodbye to You,” about the suspension of Ted Cruz’s US presidential campaign.

Hopeless Romantic, the new album from Branch, was revealed in December 2016 by Entertainment Weekly. It was released on April 7, 2017. Branch revealed her departure from Verve Records in September of 2017.

In season 4’s “The Old Sugarman Place,” Branch and Patrick Carney covered “A Horse with No Name” to accompany BoJack Horseman’s desert road trip. This rendition is featured on the series’ official soundtrack album.
