Voters in certain counties in Indiana might decide to abolish the position of township assessor under a new measure that emerged from the committee on Tuesday with a 9-2 vote. Rep. Jim Pressel, a Republican from Rolling Prairie, is the author of the legislation, which will now be discussed by the entire House. According to the proposed legislation, county election boards would have to include a public question on the general election ballot in November 2024 that would ask voters if they agree with the county continuing to “pay for the expense of township assessors in the county.”
“It simply seems duplicative, I believe, to have township assessors,” said Rep. Karen Engelman, R-Georgetown, who sponsored the bill in the House local government committee on Tuesday. All money, responsibilities, and job positions of the township assessor’s office must be transferred to the county assessor by December 31, 2027, if the ballot issue is approved by a majority of voters.
