Lloyd Banks’s Career
Along with longtime pals 50 Cent and Tony Yayo, Banks joined G-Unit in 1999. Young Buck was introduced to 50 Cent when the crew visited New York and heard him rapping.
After 50 Cent inked a deal with Aftermath Entertainment, the label signed Young Buck. Banks stayed at home and sought to raise his name through rapping in his neighborhood while 50 Cent and Tony Yayo went on the Nas Promo Tour, the Cash Money Tour, and the Ruff Ryder Tour.
Banks’ mixtapes, which he recorded with local producers, shot him to fame. Banks was a guest artist on two songs by 50 Cent: “Don’t Push Me” and the “P.I.M.P.” remix. In November of 2003, G-Unit dropped a collaborative effort titled “Beg for Mercy,” which went on to earn a double platinum certification.
In June of 2004, Banks launched his debut solo effort, titled “The Hunger for More.” The album was a commercial success and spawned a top 10 song, “On Fire,” and reached #1 on the Billboard 200, US Rap, and US R&B/Hip-Hop charts and was certified 2x Platinum.
Banks commented on the reasoning behind the title of the album: “When I say The Hunger for More, it may be referring to more success. More cash may be on the horizon. Or even esteem. The more, the merrier.
Higher levels of comprehension. All of these things contribute to my insatiable desire for more, especially since what I consider to be plenty is likely to be different from what others consider to be abundant. I feel like I made it already because I got already what everybody on the corners of the neighborhood I grew up in is striving to get.” Now over 1.5 million copies of the CD have been sold.
In 2006, he put out the Interscope Records album Rotten Apple, which debuted at number one on the US Rap and US R&B charts and at number three on the US Billboard 200. Banks had his contract with Interscope Records terminated in 2009, although he remained signed to G-Unit Records, who published his following album.
It was on his 27th birthday in 2009 when he dropped a mixtape. The single “Officer Down” was a diss track meant at Rick Ross.
