McBrayer parodied his Southern upbringing by playing stereotypical hillbilly characters in over 80 sketches on Late Night with Conan O’Brien between 2002 and 2004. On Late Night on August 10, 2007, and on September 20, 2008, he made guest appearances as Kenneth Parcell from 30 Rock. O’Brien told him during his first appearance that he thought McBrayer was too good for the show.
Then, once O’Brien moved to The Tonight Show, McBrayer appeared on O’s Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour in Eugene, Oregon; Universal City, California; and Atlanta, Georgia; all in his original role as Kenneth.
McBrayer appeared in Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body” music video in 2008. McBrayer claimed that during filming for the video, he accidentally threw a Frisbee at Carey’s face, knocking him unconscious.
