It’s hardly an exaggeration to suggest that Itachi has his subset of loyal followers. Also, it’s about time. He was a genius from the village who, out of a steadfast commitment to his people, took on an enormous and awful load for them.
One of the saddest things revealed in Naruto Shippuden was his unspoken love for his younger brother and how he strove to protect him up until the time of his death and beyond.

One of the reasons for Itachi’s immense popularity is the belief held by many that he is powerful enough to defeat the other adversaries in the series if he so chose.
Then, let’s think about whether Sasuke would have prevailed in the last showdown versus Itachi if the latter hadn’t been ill.
Could Sasuke Have Beaten a Healthier Version of Itachi in His Prime?
Itachi’s final combat with Sasuke took place while he was already sick with an incurable sickness, as was later revealed. In addition, overuse of his Mangekyo Sharingan had already damaged his eyesight.
The combat was a pleasure for the eyes, even though the shockingly foreseen result was Itachi’s demise. On the other hand, his disease was a major contributor to his untimely demise.
Now, if Itachi hadn’t been unwell, might he have murdered Sasuke? So, in short, that question has a positive answer. Itachi could have done so if he still had some strength. Sasuke was so weakened that he might have been killed by him.
The statement may seem exaggerated, but it is not. Itachi is equipped with the Totsuka Blade, the indestructible Susano’o armor, and a wide arsenal of Jutsu.
Sasuke’s victory was assured only because Itachi intended to sacrifice himself in the battle for the sake of his younger brother. Fighting to reawaken Sasuke’s Mangekyo Sharingan, as Obito would later explain.
Because of this, it’s possible Itachi could have killed Sasuke at any time if he wanted to.
