‘X,’ a slasher film directed by Ti West, is a terrifying experience. To gain fame, a pornographic film crew headed by strip club owner Wayne (Martin Henderson) travels to a rural farmstead in Texas, where the plot takes place around the year 1979. There is a presumption that the farmhouse’s elderly proprietors are clueless as to why they’re here, but this is quickly disproved.
The environment and the characters’ appearances in ‘X’ accurately evoke the spirit of the late 1970s. The film portrays what it takes to develop a small-scale independent movie before everything goes haywire and people start dying. Is X a True Story?
There is no basis in fact for the story of ‘X’. The film was made from a script written by West. As far as I know, this is West’s first picture since the 2016 action western “In a Valley of Violence.” This is also West’s first attempt into the slasher subgenre with ‘X. According to him, the film was born out of a desire to make a film on the art and craft of cinema. I wanted to do a film on filmmaking because I think there’s a lack of cultural reverence for cinema, perhaps because we’re simply so assaulted with moving pictures all of the time,” West said.
The problem was that West didn’t like the idea of filming a horror film about the process of making a horror film. When it comes to horror and pornography, “there’s always been this symbiotic relationship of being outsider genres, so I decided to tell the tale of the adult video industry through the lens… of a slasher movie,” he said. A way for me to pull an audience in and realize how different the process of making a movie is from the final product was to watch people work on it. After that, I found that horror films were becoming too sentimental for my taste. If you’re going to do anything like this in the first place, you have to go right for it. We’re here because of that nagging thought in my head.
The first thirty minutes or so of this horror thriller are devoted to lauding the craft of filmmaking as a whole. However, West intended to defy expectations and push the story on an unexpected path by referencing classic horror films like ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’
A used car salesperson is more in keeping with how I perceived this passionate, eventually hopeful, and upbeat guy but nothing had really worked out for him in the way that he had hoped. Since the character had an almost childlike innocence about him, as well as an uncanny ability to charm and con others, I found it amusing that he wasn’t aware of these qualities until they were pointed out to him.
Brittany Snow, who plays Bobby-Lynne, was inspired by Dolly Parton’s charisma, determination, and sense of destiny to portray her role in the film, I can understand why someone would think that “X” is based on an actual story, but it’s not real.
