Rich Hill, or Richard Joseph Hill, is a baseball player with the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball. Nicknamed “Dick Mountain,” he throws for the squad as the pitcher. Rich was selected by the MLB in the draft three times (1999, 2001, and 2022), although he only signed with the team in 2022. He has won the Pitcher of the Month award in both the American League and the National League. In all of Major League Baseball, Rich was the only pitcher to have a perfect game ended by the 9th inning.

Rich Hill of the Dodgers speaks up for the first time five years after the passing of his young son, as reported by Los Angeles Times. Rich Hill will always be happy that his car wouldn’t start on a cold winter night in Boston five years ago. They had a little more time than planned with their newborn baby Brooks, but sadly he passed away less than two months later.
In his heartfelt essay “I Want to Talk about My Son Brooks,” published on the Players’ Tribune, Hill related these and other stories about his son. Doctors told Hill and his wife they wanted to keep Brooks in the hospital’s special-care nursery to work on his feeding techniques before they knew the extent of the baby’s medical problems.
After a busy few days, they suggested the couple head back home to recover. They consented grudgingly, thinking it would be a good chance to check in on their second son, Brice, who was staying with relatives. You can see the official tweet by Players Tribune below.

However, they never made it out of the parking lot.
“The car just totally wouldn’t start,” Hill wrote, “no matter how many times I tried or how far into that key-turn with my shoulder I leaned. So Caitlin and I — teeth-chattering and hands shivering — trudged back inside the hospital.”
“Back to Brooks. We smiled and laughed and took some really cute pictures, and just enjoyed being all together for a few more hours.”

A few days later, doctors found out that Brooks had Lissencephaly, a rare genetic brain disorder. Soon after, Hill and his wife got the devastating news that their newborn baby had kidney failure and other health problems. In the weeks that followed, all four of them devoted as much time as possible to being together. Hill relates cradling his newborn kid and softly singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
“When I held him in my arms and sang that song to him, I truly believe that Baby Brooks felt the boundless, never-ending love I have for him in my heart,” Hill wrote.
Brooks passed away on February 24, 2014. Hill stated in his article that he will always remember the night his car wouldn’t start because it was one of the few times he was able to spend the evening with his son.
“It was almost like we were being told in that moment to stay by our son’s side and spend all the time we could with him,” Hill wrote. “Five years later, it’s safe to say that I’ve never been more grateful for car trouble in my entire life.”
