Bono, American U2 Leader Fights AIDS At State Of The Union.
Bono, aka Paul David Hewson, was the newest celebrity guest at Joe Biden’s State of the Union address.
The singer and longtime HIV/AIDS activist joined Tyre Nichols’ parents, cancer survivors, military veterans, and first responders at Jill Biden’s viewing box.
Hewson sat close to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul throughout the session. The White House invited the musician to “personify problems or themes to be addressed by the President in his speech,” according to a statement.
The visitors “embody the Biden-Harris Administration’s policies at work for the American people,” the statement said. Bono, an Irishman, has long advocated for global health and AIDS relief. Check this Who Is Designated Survivor 2023.
The artist and other campaigners helped create PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) with public and bipartisan support. President George W. Bush unveiled PEPFAR in his State of the Union 20 years ago.
President Joe Biden said:
Twenty years ago, President Bush and countless supporters and champions led a bipartisan campaign through PEPFAR to alter the global HIV/AIDS fight. A big success. Cancer can be treated similarly. Let’s eradicate cancer and cure some cancers.”
After that, the cameras focused on Bono. PEPFAR saved 25 million lives by modernising HIV treatments in disadvantaged nations.
The U2 singer co-founded Product RED, which has raised over $700 million from businesses to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa, and the nonpartisan ONE Campaign, which works with governments to tackle poverty and avoidable diseases.
