All hail the queen, or The Crown, as the case may be. When its fifth season premieres on Netflix this November, “The Crown” will continue to reign over its subjects as the most popular show in the streaming service’s history.
In 2020, showrunner Peter Morgan said they initially planned to end the series after season 5, but that pretty soon it “became clear that to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” in a press statement, per The Wrap.
The extra season will allow them to delve into the same historical period in greater detail, Morgan said, but it won’t “get us any closer to present day” (sorry, fans hoping to see a fictionalized Harry and Meghan!).
With its beginnings in the early days of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and later episodes exploring the events surrounding her, including the death of Winston Churchill, her strained relationship with Margaret Thatcher, and the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, The Crown has always stuck closely to historical fact. The Crown season 5 is now available to watch on Netflix. The filming break that was always a part of The Crown’s schedule meant that the remaining cast members could rest and prepare for their roles, which is why season 5 didn’t premiere for another two years.
What is The Crown Season 5 About?
Seasons of The Crown typically focus on a specific decade in the royal family’s history.
In the final episode of Season 4, Elizabeth scolded Charles for his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles and forbade him from divorcing her. Meanwhile, Diana was also caught having an affair, and Philip warned her that she needed to present a united front with Charles.
However, we all know that doesn’t end up being the case, and season 5 is set to delve into the deterioration of Charles and Diana’s marriage, which was officially ended in 1996 after a four-year separation that received a lot of media attention.
Season 5 will reportedly also include Diana’s controversial 1995 interview with Martin Bashir, in which she discussed Charles’s affair and said things like “there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

However, the casting of Khalid Abdalla as Dodi confirms that we will see Dodi and Diana’s rapid-fire romance, which began in the wake of Diana’s divorce, on the show. The two were in Paris together at the time of Diana’s death.
As is customary, this season will also center on Elizabeth’s interactions with the current prime minister, John Major, who served as leader from 1990 to 1997 before being succeeded by Tony Blair.
Also marking her 40th year on the throne in 1992, Elizabeth called that year her “annus horribilis” (horrible year) due to the many royal marriages that ended that year, the fire at Windsor Castle, and the announcement of Charles and Diana’s divorce.

How Will The Crown Season 5 Portray Princess Diana?
Even though Princess Diana will be front and center in Season 5, there has already been some controversy behind the scenes. As reported by Vulture, British television producer and Diana friend Jemima Khan was brought in as a consultant for Season 5. Khan claimed she and Morgan collaborated on the scripts from September 2020 to February 2021 before she decided to leave the project.
