Born Rakim Mayers on October 3, 1988, in Harlem, A$AP Rocky is the stage name he uses in his music. Mayers’ interest in rap music began when he was in elementary school, and he had written his first songs by the third grade.

Mayers’s father went to prison for drug selling when he was 12 years old, his older brother was murdered, and the rest of the family was forced to take refuge in a homeless shelter.

A$AP Rocky sold pot and crack while living in homeless shelters with his mom and sis and continuing to rap about his experiences. A fellow aspiring rapper named Cassanova was his cellmate during his two weeks in prison for drug selling.

After being found guilty of assault, he was sentenced to one month in jail with all but one day suspended and ordered to pay $1,270 in restitution to the victim.
