Larry Holmes’s boxing moniker, “The Easton Assassin,” comes from his hometown of Easton, Pennsylvania, where he was born on November 3. He was the fourth of 12 children born to John and Flossie Holmes.
His dad had to leave the family to support them as a gardener in Connecticut, but he made it a point to come back to see them every three weeks. Larry Holmes Boxing Career
Holmes has a 19–3 record as an amateur. Muhammad Ali, Joe Frasier, Jimmy Young, and Earnie Shavers all used him as a training partner at some point. He gained confidence in his abilities as a result of this. And his first big break came in March of 1978 when he boxed Earnie Shavers.
There was a unanimous judgment in Larry’s favor after twelve rounds. This victory paved the way for a rematch with WBC Heavyweight champion Ken Norton on June 9, 1978, in Las Vegas. The first 14 rounds have scored a draw, but Holmes came back to win in the 15th.
Between the years 1978 and 1983, Larry Holmes had the WBC Heavyweight Championship. Between the years 1980 and 1985, he held the Ring Heavyweight Championship. From 1983 to 1985, he held the IBF Heavyweight Championship. He surpassed Joe Louis as the sport’s all-time leader in victories with 20, passing the 25 tallied by the great himself.
Holmes made multiple comebacks after retiring in 1986 following a second loss against Michael Spinks. In 2002, he made his final bout in the ring. In 2008, Holmes was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame for his accomplishments. There were a total of 69 wins in his boxing career, and 44 of those wins were via knockout.

Larry Holmes would earn about $8 million to face Muhammad Ali in what was arguably his most famous title match. The bout he won was the only time Ali was ever stopped. Even after he “retired,” he continued to receive large sums of money. Larry Holmes fought Mike Tyson again in 1988 because Don King offered him $2.8 million to do it.
A battle between Holmes and Evander Holyfield was agreed upon in 1992 for a reported $7 million. The January 23, 1998 boxing match between Holmes and George Foreman was called off. However, the 10% of the purse that was not refunded to each combatant went to Holmes, who ended up with $400,000.

When Holmes finally retired, he returned to Easton, his hometown, and began a new life there. With the money he made as a boxer, he started several businesses.

Mark Holmes, Larry’s younger brother, also participated in boxing from 1980 to 1987, albeit he did so in the middleweight division. Larry Holmes calls his Sheridan Drive home in Palmer Township, Pennsylvania (near Easton) home. It cost him $1.7 million.
