Holmes has a 19–3 record as an amateur. Muhammad Ali, Joe Frasier, Jimmy Young, and Earnie Shavers all used him as a training partner at some point. He gained confidence in his abilities as a result of this. And his first big break came in March of 1978 when he boxed Earnie Shavers.

There was a unanimous judgment in Larry’s favor after twelve rounds. This victory paved the way for a rematch with WBC Heavyweight champion Ken Norton on June 9, 1978, in Las Vegas. The first 14 rounds have scored a draw, but Holmes came back to win in the 15th.
