Early Life and Career Beginnings
The third of Edison and Mary Amos’s children, Tori Amos was born on August 22, 1963, in Newton, North Carolina. Her father took his position as a Methodist minister from Washington, DC to Baltimore, Maryland when she was two years old.

Amos didn’t need to take piano lessons as her brother and sister did because she taught herself to play as soon as she could reach the keyboard. She was already writing her songs by the time she was three.
She was accepted into the Johns Hopkins University Peabody Institute’s Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division at the age of five, making her the youngest student in the program’s history. From 1968 until her scholarship was revoked in 1974 for “insubordination,” she studied classical piano at Peabody.
When Amos was 13 years old, he began performing in piano bars and gay nightclubs. In 1977, while a student at Richard Montgomery High School, she co-wrote a song with her brother that went on to win a teen talent contest.
By the time Amos was 17, her father had already sent numerous homemade demo cassettes to record producers and labels. Atlantic Records eventually reached out to her, and she signed with the company. In 1984, Amos uprooted her life to seek a career in music in Los Angeles.
Y Kant Tori Read
Amos’s musical trio, Y Kant Tori Read, was named after her sight-reading challenges and was founded in 1986. Members of the group also included Steve Caton, Matt Sorum, Brad Cobb, and Jim Tauber.
After the economic failure of their 1988 self-titled first album, Y Kant Tori Read broke up the following year. Shortly after, Amos began singing harmonies for a variety of singers, including Stan Ridgway, Al Stewart, and Sandra Bernhard.
Solo Career in the 90s
Amos’ first solo album, titled “Little Earthquakes,” was released in early 1992. Both critically and commercially successful, the album explored her religious background and sexual awakening and debuted at number 15 in the UK and the top 60 in the US.
In addition, it gave rise to the radio hits “Crucify,” “Silent All These Years,” “China,” and “Winter.” Amos’s second album, titled “Under the Pink,” was released in 1994. It was even more successful than its predecessor, reaching the top 12 on the Billboard 200 and the top spot in the UK upon its initial release.
The 1996 album “Boys for Pele” was Amos’ third solo effort, and it was recorded in an Irish church using baroque instruments such as a harmonium, harpsichord, and clavichord. Though it received lukewarm reviews from critics, the film nevertheless became an economic success, reaching the number two spot in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
The CD “From the Choirgirl Hotel” was published in 1998, after Amos had her Cornwall barn transformed into a state-of-the-art recording facility.
Amos obtained an early termination of her contract with Epic Records over financial and creative differences. After that, in 2009, she released “Abnormally Attracted to Sin” under a partnership with Universal Republic Records. Later in the year, she dropped her debut holiday album, “Midwinter Graces,” which featured both new and reimagined takes on classic Christmas songs.
Further Solo Career
“Night of Hunters,” Amos’s first album in a classical vein, was published in 2011. It has covers of works by Bach, Schubert, Satie, and Debussy, among others. Afterward, she released “Gold Dust” in 2012, “Unrepentant Geraldines” in 2014, “Native Invader” in 2017, and “Ocean to Ocean” in 2021). The latter album was composed and recorded during the COVID quarantine, and it features the drum and bass work of Matt Chamberlain and Jon Evans.
Personal Life and Activism
Amos married English sound engineer Mark Hawley in February 1998, and they have a daughter together. They spend time both in Florida (at Sewall’s Point) and Britain (in Bude, Cornwall). Neil Gaiman, author and longtime friend of Amos, is the godfather of her daughter.
As a result of being a victim of sexual assault at the age of 22, Amos now devotes a great deal of her time to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network. She placed the inaugural call on the organization’s toll-free helpline in 1994. She also took up the role of the group’s first prominent public figure to speak on its behalf.
