Creation

Originally debuting in 1962’s The Incredible Hulk #1, the Hulk was the brainchild of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, two legends in the world of comic books. Some have interpreted Lee’s creation of the Hulk as a reaction to the nuclear threat during the Cold War, despite his claims that he was inspired by both Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Roy Thomas and Len Wein imagined Wolverine, their short but ferocious Canadian hero. In 1974, in the teaser panel of issue 181 of The Incredible Hulk, he made his first appearance.

Backstory

Pennsylvania State University trained Bruce Banner to be a physicist. So that he could save a teenager from being killed in a test explosion, he designed a gamma bomb and drove his car onto the testing field. Exposure to so much radiation transformed him into an enormous, unpredictable monster that night. Any time his temper flares or his life is in danger, he transforms into the Hulk.

The origin of the Incredible Hulk is revealed in the first episode of the classic Hulk animated cartoon segment from Marvel Super Heroes in 1966.

James Howlett, aka Wolverine, was born in Alberta, Canada. He was raised to believe that his wealthy farm owner parents were named John and Elizabeth Howlett, when in reality his father was the farm’s groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. After Thomas murders John, James retaliates by stabbing him to death with a bone claw that grows out of his back. After accidentally killing his childhood friend Rose, he is sent away to a mining colony in the Yukon by his grandfather. However, he eventually runs away to live with the wolves. Later, he enrols in Canada’s Military Defense Program, only to be abducted by Weapon X and subjected to experimental testing. The origin of Wolverine, as told in the Origins comic book series, is detailed in this video.
