Woke Season 2

Woke Season 2 Premiere Recap: Keef Finds a New Platform — Grade It!

The second season of Hulu’s Woke began with a well-intentioned liberal white woman waking up and saying Breonna Taylor’s name. While going down the street, she read all the correct books and even flipped off the cops.

Then something happened. When Keef boarded the bus and sat next to this same woman, she grabbed her pocketbook, fearful that he might steal it. So much for her being awake. A white man on the bus recognized Keef and complimented his work, and the woman calmed down. She went on to tell the artist that she put one of his comic strips on her refrigerator, next to a photo of Vice President Kamala Harris.

The man introduced himself as a cop, and the two began bickering about who was more awake, him or her, until Keef quietly off the bus and walked away. The beauty of Woke is that it became evident as the program progressed that Keef — and most of us — aren’t all that different from that woman. We all mean well, yet when it comes to being socially conscious, we all have blind spots.

At first, Keef believed he could keep repeating his new platitude: “The white page is nothing without the black lines.” But he quickly understood that his core group of supporters fans had grown tired of his slogan and wanted something new. When a protest in the park invited him to speak, it became increasingly unclear what that “more” would entail.

Keef was about to repeat his sentence when the organizer informed him that they’d uploaded a video of him saying the same thing on Juneteenth. Meanwhile, Ayana teased Keef about the increased attention he’d face now that he’d established himself as an activist. Ayana’s first date (of three) added to the pressure when she expressed her dismay at Keef for not including the Native American Ohlone tribe of San Francisco in his work.

More people spoke up, requesting that Keef address issues such as the prison-industrial complex, transphobia, food insecurity, school inequity, and climate change. This startled Keef, who attempted to flee the protest until Clovis stepped in as the voice of reason, looking incredible now that he’s ripped.

Clovis informed Keef that he could fake it until he worked out what his new platforms and platitudes were by speaking in a vague but upbeat manner, similar to Common until he figured out what his new platforms and platitudes were. Common even retweeted Keef’s speech, which stated nothing but gained him hundreds of new followers. Gunther was disillusioned by the entire incident, as he had hoped to get into a fight with the cops. Keef, on the other hand, was encouraged by a tickled Ayana to make the most of his newfound popularity.

Keef ultimately opted to enlist the support of the public in taking down the man — or anyone — a move that will come back to haunt him as Season 2 progresses.
