UConn’s star player, Jordan Hawkins, was battling illness during Saturday’s Final Four victory over Miami, which his team won 72-59. Hawkins’ availability for the game was in doubt. Even at Saturday’s shootaround, he was limited in his participation. Yet he wound up suiting up for UConn and contributing 13 points.
In the middle of the game, Connecticut’s head coach Dan Hurley disclosed that Hawkins was not in optimal physical condition. He attributed it all to the calamari he had consumed a few days prior.
Hawkins told reporters that he got food poisoning after the game. He assured his squad, though, that he would be participating in a high-stakes game, saying: “I knew I was going to play. I didn’t care how I was feeling. Put me on a stretcher, it didn’t matter.”
In the first half alone, Jordan Hawkins scored 13 points on three 3-pointers. UConn scored two of them early on to take a commanding 9-0 lead over Miami.
Hawkins was one of the four finalists everyone was talking about. He has played a crucial role in UConn’s offense this season, averaging 16.2 points per game and shooting 38.6 percent from beyond the arc on 7.7 attempts.

Jordan Hawkins Will Be Ready To Play Against San Diego, Despite His Illness
Despite Jordan Hawkins’ absence due to illness, the team reportedly put in a solid effort in the semi-final match of the season, as reported by Sportskeeda. Here is what freshman Alex Karaban had to say: “He’s one tough player. This just shows he wants to be out there fighting with us, even though he feels … I don’t even know what percentage he feels. To still do what he did out there at such an elite level, is special. I mean, his poise out there, his confidence out there, he’s the main reason why we’re here. Just him being a leader is special.”
Donovan Clingan, another one of Hawkins’ freshmen teammates, reacted on the fact that Hawkins started the championship game and praised his leadership:
“He’s an absolute dog. When I heard he wasn’t coming to practice (Friday), I was a little worried at first. But I realized that he would never sit out a Final Four game. I knew he’d come here and dog it out. Credit it to him …it’s impressive.”
For Monday’s championship game versus San Diego, Jordan Hawkins has confirmed his availability. “I’ll be all right,” Hawkins said. Hawkins will likely play despite being unwell for only a day, hoping to lead UConn to their first national championship since 2014.
