Hernandez was born in Costa Mesa, California on June 9, 2000. Her parents, Wanda and Anthony Hernandez are both from Puerto Rico, and she is their daughter.
Abeka Academy High School in Old Bridge, New Jersey was where she and her siblings, Jelysa and Marcus, all graduated. She began training in gymnastics at a young age and quickly became an expert.

Laurie Hernandez’s Career.
At the 2012 U.S. Classic, Hernandez, then just 12 years old, competed in the junior division and finished in 11th place, launching her professional gymnastics career. She did well enough to advance to the National Championships in St. Louis, where she ultimately finished in 21st place.
She competed in the 2013 WOGA Classic and placed second overall. A few months later, in Huntsville, Texas, she won the floor exercise, came in second in the all-around, and third in the balancing beam and vault at the American Classica.
As time went on, she was included on the U.S. junior national team and sent to Chicago for the U.S. Classic. Sixth in the all-around competition, she also took first place in the floor exercise.
In August of 2013, she competed in the junior all-around category at the National Championships and came away with the silver medal.
She competed in the International Junior Mexican Cup with a team of three other girls, and in September she was chosen to represent the United States at the Junior Japan International in Yokohama, where she placed third. In the team category, they triumphed.
Hernandez’s 2014 was more difficult than usual because she injured her wrist in January. She made a speedy recovery from her initial injury that allowed her to return to competition, but a subsequent kneecap dislocation required her to sit out for six months. She wasn’t able to return to training until the fall, missing all but the final U.S. camp of the year due to her absence.
Nonetheless, she showed remarkable resilience and was selected to represent the United States at the 2015 City of Jesolo Trophy. There, she won the junior division overall title. She repeated as junior all-around champion at the 2015 U.S.
Classic and also triumphed on vault and uneven bars. She triumphed as a junior at the National Championships, taking first place in the all-around competition.
