In 1971, Barbara graduated with a teaching degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College, after which she taught for a year. According to Corcoran, she worked at 22 different jobs before getting into real estate.

Corcoran got her first job in the real estate industry at the age of 23. She worked as a receptionist for the Giffuni Brothers. In 1973, she and her boyfriend, Ray Simone, started the real estate firm Corcoran-Simone with a loan of $1,000 from Corcoran.
Ray left Barbara for her secretary seven years later, and the pair eventually divorced. He had assured Corcoran that she would fail without him, but she has since proven him wrong. As a result of the company’s tremendous success, Barbara was able to sell Corcoran-Simone to The Corcoran Group in 2001 for a whopping $66 million.
Beginning in the 1970s, Barbara published the real estate newsletter The Corcoran Report.
