Witch Craft Works Season 2 Release Date, Still Possible?

Witch Craft Works Season 2

Witch Craft Works Season 2

The 2014 fantasy anime series Witch Craft Works is presented in the animation medium. Before the anime, Ry Mizunagi began work on the project in 2010. While the anime is based on manga, it only follows the plot of the manga loosely.

It’s been seven years since the first screening of the animation at Tokyo’s Cinemart Shinjuku theatre, which drew a crowd of 2,000 people. Produced by the same team responsible for the groundbreaking anime One Punch Man and the critically acclaimed Food Wars! is a production by the team at J.C.Staff.

Licensed by Crunchyroll, the animation premiered on Tokyo MX on January 5, 2014, and ran until March 23, 2014. Fans of the anime have been waiting for the second season to air for a very long time, but it has not yet been aired. Is it possible for the anime to return for a second season, given how much time has passed? Let’s review an anime storyline and then examine the second season’s spoilers.

What Was the Plotline of the Anime?

Typical student issues plague Takamiya Honoka. He rides the bus to school every day with Kagari, the princess of the school and the object of virtually universal adulation among the student body. Kagari and her friend sat at a desk next to hers in class, but they never spoke to each other. The princess’s devoted followers tormented Takamiya over the smallest of indiscretions between them.

Part of the school building collapses over Takamiya when he is playing in the playground one day. After Takamiya gives up hope, Kagari comes to his rescue. Kagari, on the other hand, is dressed as a witch and is holding a broomstick. Once again, Takamiya is attacked by rabbit warriors before anyone can figure out what’s going on. Even though she was responsible for their destruction, Kagari assures Takamiya that she will now defend him openly rather than in secret.

The mystery friendship between the two begins at this point, much to the dismay of their classmates. Although her family and friends disapprove of her relationship with this “master,” she has no plans to leave him. The opposing side, however, has no plans to release Takamiya. Five witches will join Takamiya’s class next year. Consequently, the plot begins to take form.

Will There Be a Second Season of Witch Craft Works?

As of this writing on September 6, 2022, neither J.C. Staff nor any other company associated with the anime has renewed it for a second season. Season one of the anime debuted in 2014, however, there has been no news of a second season leaking out. Much long-running anime have been renewed for new seasons despite the passage of time.

In keeping with this speculation, a new season of Witch Craft Works may be made since there’s enough material left in the manga to turn it into an entirely new series.

Mizunagi, Ry, is responsible for both the writing and art in Witch Craft Works, as was noted at the outset of this piece. In the manga, which was published by the illustrious Kodansha, the story began on March 5, 2010, and continued until February 7, 2022.

There are currently 15 volumes of the manga in English. The first season of the anime was based on the first six volumes. For the anime to have enough content for a second season, the manga would need to have a long continuation. There is enough material for a second season of the anime, as 11 volumes have not yet been adopted.

Disc sales are also significant; while this medium has not been as lucrative as it once was due to the rise of digitalization in recent years, it was still quite valuable back when Witch Craft Works was initially published.

Six thousand to seven thousand copies of the animes were projected to sell, given their publication years. When it dropped below that mark, the committee deciding whether or not the season would continue would not consider it profitable.

The anime’s six-disc collection was a huge success. The average number of units sold was 4,377, which is close to the goal but still not good enough to be termed a success. Comparatively, Love Live: Second Season sold an impressive 67,341 copies, whereas Haikyuu sold an average of 25,514 copies during the same time period.

Witch Craft Works was ranked as the 38th best anime available out of a total of 145. Considering how rarely anime get renewed for subsequent seasons, this position does not bode well.

A new season is more likely to happen if an anime is exclusively distributed (on services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon) or if a smartphone game adaption is released. But you won’t find any of these at Witch Craft Works. Given the level of interest right now, we don’t see much cause for optimism. Even though the anime has a Twitter account, just approximately 10,000 people actually follow it.

This demonstrates that people in Japan have low expectations. It’s hard to imagine another season of the anime given all these factors, but it’s not impossible because there’s stuff in the manga to adapt.

However, since the likelihood of this happening is so small, we advise readers to start the manga series with volume 7. It’s worth noting that the Witch Craft Works manga has an English translation (published by Vertical). Should the green light be given for a new season, production on the next installment of the anime might begin as early as 2024. Hold tight!
