The Martin twins were raised by their single mother, Jenny Bennett, in the North Carolina village of Cooleemee, as revealed by Sportskeeda. They shared a shabby, insect-infested trailer with their older brother, Raheem. There, on a rusty hoop, they started playing the game for the first time.
Bennett had a child when she was very young and was thus was disowned by her family. Just over two years later, Cody and Caleb were born, but their father was never there for them. Bennett worked three jobs to pay for her family and faced discrimination as a white mother of three children of different races in the South.
“People would say things quite often,” Bennett said. “One instance where my car had broken down and we were actually walking back to our home and someone tried to run us over. The stares, the looks, the whispers — direct and indirect comments. Those things happened a lot.”

Caleb Martin Reflects On The Influence Of His Mother
Cody and Caleb Martin may have had a hard life growing up in an area with a lot of crime. “I have a crazy, crazy amount of respect for my mom and all the stuff she’s gone through,” Caleb added, expressing the regard he and his brother’s other siblings also felt for their mother and the principles she taught in them.
“Cody and I will reminisce about our childhood, and we now notice all of the stuff she didn’t let us in on when we were little, all of the stuff we realize now. It was hard, but she made a lot of sacrifices like not eating certain nights and passing up job opportunities because she had no help at home and had to be there for us.”
Bennett said that all her hard work had been worth it when she saw her twin sons get full basketball scholarships to the University of Nevada.
Bennett admitted, “It’s been tough at times, but I always told them ‘You sacrifice now for later.'”
“It’s been a long, hard road, but it’s been well worth it to see them where they are and to see them happy.”
Caleb Martin stated that he is content with his upbringing.
“Those are the things that make you into the person you are. Everybody goes through some type of tough times and tough beginnings, but that’s when you fight through adversity and it helps you out mentally. When you have problems on the court, you realize those problems are nothing. … When I get down on myself, I catch myself because I know it can be so much worse. I know what we overcame.”
