This week, the biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is featured on This Week in Biopics. Naomie Ackie plays the talented, famous, and tragic pop singer in the movie, which is now available on Netflix and other VOD streaming services like Amazon Prime Video. Ackie, who was in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and will be in Mickey 17, Bong Joon-ho’s highly awaited sequel to Parasite, might break out in a major way with this.
But it may also be a thankless job, given the following: One is how common the subject is. Two, the singer’s tragic life story is deserving of more than just a Behind the Music bio. And third, the biopic, and the music biopic in particular, is pretty much dead in 2023, at least in terms of originality.

The most popular movie on the streaming service right now is the historical thriller with Naomi Ackie as the late singer. However, the film is available for purchase or rental via video-on-demand platforms like Vudu, YouTube, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video for people who don’t have a Netflix account, as reported by Los Angeles Times.
At the US box office in December, Sony Pictures’ “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody” opened in third place, behind “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” The cinematic biography of Houston, directed by Kasi Lemmons, received mixed reviews and followed biopics about the careers of other famous singers including Queen, Elton John, Aretha Franklin, and Elvis Presley.

A reviewer for Tribune News Service noted that “as the film progresses toward Whitney’s tragic end, it starts to take on a distinctly ghoulish quality,” particularly in a scene that imagines Whitney’s frame of mind just before she passes away.
It’s a movie that leaves us all with a lot of troubling concerns about Houston’s life and legacy, and it feels less like a celebration and more like further exploitation of the celebrity. ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ is a letdown, and it’s a shame that it won’t let Whitney rest in peace.
The 2018 documentary “Whitney,” which received more positive reviews, is also available to watch on video on demand.
