When WWF announced the de@th of Rhodes (born Virgil Runnels), the company said it was “deeply saddened” by the news. WWE released a statement saying, “We offer our sincere condolences to Runnels’ loved ones and WWE family,” as per The Guardian.

During his wrestling heyday in the 1970s and 1980s, Rhodes became one of America’s best-known stars inside the ring, known for his Texan charisma, his eloquent interviews, his in-ring antics, and his feuds with rivals Ric Flair, Superstar Billy Graham, and Tully Blanchard. A wrestling dynasty was also established by Rhodes. His sons Dustin and Cody, who go by the names “Goldust” and “Stardust,” respectively, are professional wrestlers for the WWE.

In 2007, Cody and Dustin Hall of Famed their father in WWE. Cody made an impassioned speech in which he claimed,  “Words like great, legend and icon are often too prostituted. Your next inductee, the American Dream, was the greatest talker in the history of this business. All he needed was a mic.

“My father was a great family man: He was my seat in school, he was the food on the table, he was everywhere. And if there was a Hall of Fame for fathers you could bet he’d be in that one as well.”

After that, Rhodes became a promoter and booker for several companies, including World Championship Wrestling. His official retirement date was 2007.

WWE noted that Runnels’ hard work, passionate interviews, and unstoppable energy made him a hero to fans all around the world. Runnels was “a loving husband and a creative visionary who helped shape the landscape of WWE long after his in-ring career had ended,” the company said in a statement. He was also the devoted father of WWE superstars Goldust (Dustin Runnels) and Stardust (Cody Runnels).
