INVESTIGATIVE BUSINESSMAN Tunic, a video game produced by Finji, takes inspiration from the Zelda and Souls series in a reverent and revolutionary way. After playing the game, I am confident that it is a masterpiece worthy of celebration, a little jewel strewn among the avalanche of blockbuster releases that will be released in the year 2022. On a deserted island with terrible monsters, you take the role of a cartoon fox who must unravel deep mysteries that are hidden in plain sight.
Dissimilar landscapes await you as you go through a forest on your way to the shore. For example, in a quarry, players must fight animals wearing gas masks while bathed in the fuchsia glow of massive crystal formations, while on a mountain, they must speed through collapsing architecture covered in snow in quest of a way to the summit.
Andrew Shouldice was the primary designer of the game. Before joining Tunic, he worked at Silverback, a Canadian firm known for its puzzle games. The creator discussed the game’s early incarnations and core during an appearance on the Waypoint Radio program. According to Shouldice, “one of the things that end up being a very crucial aspect of Tunic’s design is being able to slide around corners and explore in places where it feels like you’re not allowed to be.”
Enchanted by the game’s visuals, I found myself swooning over the vibrant colors. There are 60 tracks available for purchase on Bandcamp, all of which serve to both uplift and calm the whole experience. Players who are intrigued by Tunic’s design will be rewarded thanks to the game’s unique isometric perspective.
As you explore the island, you’ll find cryptic sections of a guidebook as you pick up better weapons, open chests, and forge new paths. The guidebook is chock-full of maps, tips, and methods that will help you succeed in Tunic, even though it is only partially translated into English.
I had more pleasure with Tunic if I paid attention to the guidebook and looked for more pages. Spiky traps, piercing lasers, and winding pathways lead to unexpected spots in enigmatic dungeons. With the help of accurate maps, I made my way through the dark.

Tunic’s fighting is more accessible and avoidable when compared to Elden Ring, the game I’m now playing.
