The events of Total War: Pharaoh take place in post-pharaonic Egypt, during the New Kingdom era. The May 23 announcement of Total War: Pharaoh featured a cinematic teaser that showed off the game’s setting in ancient Egypt.

Total War Pharaoh’s Setting

The time period of Total War: Pharaoh is roughly 1200 BCE. This was during the New Kingdom of Egypt, when the empire was at its height. While Egypt may be weak after the pharaoh’s de@th, Egypt’s neighbors the Hittites, who live in what is now Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), are eager to take advantage of the situation.

The Canaanites are stuck in the middle of a potential regional battle between two powerful empires. They can either choose a side or try to protect themselves from both adversaries by forming an alliance with the raiding Sea Peoples.

Total War: Pharaoh Features

Total War: Pharaoh tones down the series’ forays into the mystical and legendary with Total War: Warhammer and Total War: Three Kingdoms, but it adds a fascinating and intricate set of new features to the series’ signature gameplay.

The clear skies of a sunny day can suddenly give way to enormous sandstorms or rain, which influence troops’ morale and visibility, and can have a significant impact on the course of war. Rain can convert the firm ground into mud, impeding troop mobility or fouling the wheels of chariots, and extremely high temperatures will lead soldiers to become fatigued much more quickly.

The stance system is another addition, allowing commanders to direct troops to adopt a variety of positions in response to coming into contact with opposing formations. Troops ordered to advance will attempt to push back the enemy, while those given the hold command will try to prevent the enemy from advancing through their position. Players can also issue ground orders to troops to retreat as the enemy draws near and makes contact. You can see the official tweet by Total War below.

The new “armor degradation” rating for armored troops indicates how many more hits the unit can take before the armor finally gives. When protection fails, the defended units are left wide open to assault.

Battleground fires are affected by the game’s new dynamic weather system. A small fire driven by the wind can quickly spread from dry brush on the ground to nearby trees and structures.

The sieges have evolved in response to the growing emphasis on realism and accuracy in combat simulation. The so-called “pocket ladders” that appear out of nowhere as soldiers near the outskirts of a town will no longer be available to them in Pharaoh. Instead, players will have to calculate how long of a siege they can sustain based on the number of ladders they construct and bring into battle. Sappers can also be used to weaken a settlement’s defenses.

The campaign map is interactive and changes to represent the ancient world’s finances, crises, and catastrophes. The region experiences worse weather occurrences, greater attacks by the destructive Sea Peoples, and eventual hopelessness as the Bronze Age disintegrates into a disordered Dark Age due to an increase of violence and governmental instability.
